It really depends - in my opinion it’s 2 fold: rewards (comp) and recognition (being seen). However, there is an intersection point between the 2.
I find personally it needs to be a reasonable balance of both. However, someone may be paid well but they want more recognition, praise, visibility, leadership or impact.
Compensation is part of what shows you just how much the company values you, in ax explicit dollar amount.
So this is where poor comp, will bleed into recognition issues and resentment if not balanced. Also recognition is important feedback to guide employees on performance, reward them for a job well done, build relationships and belonging.
I know where I am now.. I feel both are lacking and I’d be happy to leave for better pay in short order. I get to learn A LOT, but I’m at a point in my career where I need to be paid for that knowledge.
