Do you think restaurant jobs should come with mandatory physical therapy or wellness benefits? Between burns, cuts, sore knees, and wrecked backs, I feel like we’re an injury-prone workforce that nobody talks about. I’ve seen cooks working doubles on sprained ankles and servers icing wrists on their ten-minute breaks.

This industry chews people up and spits them out. Owners don’t care if you burn out cause there’s always someone else to hire.

I think we need better benefits overall - but the leadership will say at least we have SOME benefits - the part time workers don’t get any benefits… the problem is that this industry has such a meager profit margin, that it’s hard to just survive as a business to begin with, let alone give benefits to staff.

The reality is that they don't see this as something worthy of their time, so they don't even think about it. Having some massage credit or just a spa day for the employee of the month would be amazing.

like

In a perfect world they would. Unfortunately profit is everything in the industry (and every other, for that matter), and employee wellness programs cost money. I don't expect mine to offer something like this any time soon, as much as I wish they would. I'm paying my chiropractor something like $350/month just to keep me from keeling over during my work shifts.

As a prep chef, on my feet with no stops or breaks for up to 8 hours, it gets me a free meal - that day only, no saving up - and I had to find bandaids as I was bleeding from a cut, and got bitched at for bleeding near a flat-top prep area. I had to search for a first aid kit. In agreement with another respondent, income is tight for owners, and reminding that I am the one who accepted the job and what came/comes along with it, for the pay offered. PT or wellness benefits, while nice, don't really fit into the business model in food service, though insurance covering patrons and suits that might arise, is always necessary. I won't say "Buck up.", but have to admit that I took the job as offered, for what it was and came with it. I, too, have seen a great many co-workers tough through physical infirmities to make sure that paycheck comes on payday...

Have you ever taken a career slow down? I am feeling burnt out from COVID and the incremental responsibilities thrown my way over the last 5+ years. I feel like my health has deteriorated. I like my company, but I want to do less. I don’t need to be a HR Director, CHRO, etc. With a career slowdown, I am prepared for a lower compensation and would want decent benefits. Any lessons learned or success stories about career slowdowns?
