Our family of 7 is in a 2600 sq ft house. It is plenty of room. With kids ranging from 7 to 15.
Spend the money on a bigger property rather than a bigger house. You'll enjoy the room to move outside more.
We’re a family of 5 with 700 sq feet. It’s temporary, but manageable
How and why? We're a family of 5 and moving out of our 2500 sq ft house into a 1000~ sq ft apartment for b-school in the fall. We're really anxious about it. What works and what doesn't?

When we buy, wondering if space will be a bigger concern for when the kids are older. We’re lucky to be able to afford a lot but asks ourselves if we really need it. Anyone with more grown kids have any input?
I think you'll be able to adapt to the space given. When you have a bigger house, you may be filling it up just because you have it. Sometimes less is more if used more effectively. I grew up family of 5 in about 2000 sq ft. Had to share a bedroom with sibling but that made us closer. That sized house was pretty normal in my area. If you were lucky everyone had their own bedroom.
I think more than that are just bonuses. Office, extra guest bedroom, home theater room, game room exercise room, etc.
The financial freedom and potentially ability to retire earlier are counterbalance to the size (assuming similar market and cost/size)
Also ensure the bigger place isn't to keep up with the Jones.
1300 sqft for family of 3. Even during quarantine it’s not so bad.
FYI a 3500 sqft single family home would probably be $5M where I live. 😂

A2 is right. It all depends on where you live. 3400 sq ft is very unusual in areas built up before the 1990s... The average American house size has grown in a sort of gluttonous fashion over the past 50 years.
We moved from 1400 SF to 2350 SF a year and half ago when we were planning for kid #1. Remodeled upon purchase and added 200 more. The house feels giant to us, but I do like dedicated office, playroom, guest room, etc. My parents were often here staying over with the baby so we had 5 people around a lot. If it was just us 3 we probably wouldn’t need all this. But my friends in TX or GA or other low cost places with their McMansions that cost 1/4 the price of my house don’t understand how we “get by”... I will say with coronaquarantine the space has been amazing.
Talked about this last night with our neighbors. 20 years ago it was all about massive homes. Now, people want manageable homes and spend the difference in second homes, travel, experiences, etc.
My wife and I bought a 3200 sq ft home 2 years ago. We’re about to start a family and got in a neighborhood that we love. Hard to see us needing more space in the future. We skipped the traditional “first home” and bought one that’ll last us.
