Where I work, after 6pm everyone’s Skype status automatically defaults to “away” so as not to add additional pressure to be green/active at night. A small change with massively positive effects.
Latham. I doubted the benefits but am now a big time advocate.
I just logged out of Skype and now people can’t see my status. Have you tried that?
This. I'm NEVER logged in. Problem solved!
Pro
I always set my Skype (Teams precursor) to busy/away. People learned that it didn’t accurately reflect my availability. Nobody ever complained.
Leaving yourself logged in on Teams after hours is the virtual equivalent of leaving he office with your jacket on the back of your chair, a fresh drink on your desk, and some work in progress on your desk. 😜
The key is to make sure people can always see that steam rising from the coffee you left! 😂
My firm uses both Skype AND Teams for some reason and it is hell. Some partners only use one, some partners use the other, another partner will text me asking me to call him and when I do he doesn't pick up and sends me an email that he's busy. I live and work in a constant state of chaos.
No, I like knowing that other people are working with me when I am working at home.
Sometimes it doesn’t bother me and I just leave mine green whenever I’m working but when I feel overwhelmed I change it to away and leave it like that and that helps. No one complains since I’m still answering emails and completing assignments on time.
I usually override and set to do not disturb / on a call / away, etc. I don't mind people messaging me that way, but I don't want it pinging like a nickel slots machine that just hit a jackpot. And I don't want it popping on screen.
Btw, why is it I can be typing mid sentence and the computer steals my cursor... too much crap bloat ware running in the background
My firm doesn’t use any type of platform that says whether we are “online” or not and it’s pretty amazing
Mine doesn’t even log in half the time and I turned off read receipts on the actual chat so I don’t worry about it.
I’m just invisible all the time. Reminds me of the AIM days.
Get the teams app on your phone
I have been logged off since week 2 of working at my firm and have no intention to ever sign in. Everyone has adapted.
To be clear, my issue is that I get attitude from people if I’m “away” for 20 minutes to eat dinner. I’ve already skipped lunch.. let me eat!!!
Definitely toxic. I would never harass someone about their Skype status.
