It’s a BS credential IMO. Actually a negative indicator for modern SDLC practitioners
Yes, totally diluted. We have a certification in our company that is beyond that and you have to go through full board review to obtain, so inside IBM, I look more for that than PMP. Pretty much anyone can get a PMP
I will never put a PMP in front of a client because I’m yet to meet one that knows the difference between their ass hole and their mouth
Rule number 1 of PMPs - don’t talk about your PMP
Negative? Wow I knew it seemed diluted but dang. I work in our gov practice and it’s a requirement for some project roles but it seems so useless since the same folks always lead projects and some don’t even have their PMP.
(Cont) My personal take is that it’s necessary for fed consulting leadership but I’d never hire someone who hangs it off the end of their name like a badge of honor.
Definitely negative, if you have it don’t advertise it
I judge people’s decisions who have a PMP. You don’t need it to be a solid program lead
Lol now you see my rage for the damn PMPs
Caveat in my post: SDLC. Software development. In tech Agile is ascendant so other types of project management are not as welcome. Thus PMP is devalued and things like CSM are better (though still BS IMO lol)
My practice primarily does SI work so your caveat is very relevant. I have my CSM lol.
SM1 savage
Good to have if you’re in the fed space. A lot of LCATs require an advanced degree or PMP. PMP is a lot cheaper than a Masters... doesn’t mean you’re a PM master, but does give you a decent foundation. Plus you’ll get a free 1k from the firm.
SM1 - what firm are you at? Such an ignorant thing to say. That’s like saying I could never put someone in front of the client who has a history degree.
PMP is like college degree you need it to get into the door some places but doesnt mean the person is worth 1/10th their weight in salt
I got a PMP b/c I’m in federal, it’s a req for promotion to manager, and there’s a 3k bonus for getting it. But it’s such a racket (PMI sells the training and the test!) and definitely not a credential I advertise.
OP: PMP is required to hold the PM LCAT on a lot of federal contract vehicles. And PM LCAT is typically pretty high. That’s why everyone has it. Doesn’t mean they are a good or bad PM just that they are versed in the pmbok way of doing things.
