As far as the 8-hr workday, I'm highly confident that I could get MORE done over time if I only worked 6-hr days instead of 8. It would also drastically improve my mental, physical, and social wellbeing
I do that, to an extent. But if it's still on a workday, I find it really hard to relax.
And anyway, due to exhaustion I'm always slowly but surely slipping behind, and it takes me more than 8 hours to get a full day's work in.
Not really, my workday is 8-530 (sometime log back on to finish work after she’s in bed) which makes sense and aligns with my daughter’s daycare schedule 7:30-6.
If you have the type of job where you don’t need to meet during times other people are working or have dependencies on decisions to complete your end of the work and there are no impacts to work progress and deadlines flexibility is fine. Assess when your team / client working hours are and try to reframe your thinking / habits to how you can be most effective during that time vs. why you should have accommodations for different working hours
I usually get my work done for a full week in 6 hours of hyper focus, so yeah, flexibility is necessary.
Freelance is the answer. Pick your time zone, pick your scope. Charge hyperfocus rates.
My hyperfocus rates, if priced fairly, would be unconscionable
Traditional work in the office is the worst for me. I have to mask like a ninja so people don’t think I’m bugging out or something. I go for walks on my lunch break just to get some wiggles out. I especially enjoy when people congregate right in front my desk like I’m not in the zone dealing invoices and balancing accounts. Don’t worry I don’t need to pay attention to those details because all I can hear are the 3 colleagues catching up right in front of me.
The office space has plenty of gathering areas to catchup. If I let it get to me I feel disrespected.
If I work from home I get my shit done. No questions asked. If it’s an office day? Half my work done because god forbid you plug in with headphones to zone out all the extra noise would be a big no no for the office culture. Ugh!
Absolutely. I've been floundering at work, but about to have first checkin with my manager. I'm going to try to arrange a more flexible schedule.
I don't know for sure how it's going to go, but I feel much better about the chances, after leaving the consulting world, where stuff feels more rigid since everything is tied to appearances.
I think everybody’s different even with ADHD for some people. The structure and consistency works best for others flexibility.
ADHD or not, everyone's brain works differently and we have a plethora of asynchronous communication methods, so it really makes no sense that a company refuses to be flexible when it comes to working hours.
Consultant 1, same here - my brain cannot handle all these communication methods. I want to accomplish work, not spend time looking for information.
What I meant was we needn't force employees to work 9-5pm from the office if they can accomplish their work then notify the team via asynchronous methods like Slack Chat.
Trying sitting in a chair from 10-7
Get the days tasks done as fast as possible and coast the rest of day. Or get ahead but don’t publicize it right away so you can act like you’re working on it even tho it done. I got laid off tho so take with grain of salt
