Yep. I’m Right there with you. I turned the notifications off in Outlook for this reason. Helps me stay on task. Before I did that I would constantly have “squirrel” moments.
Samee! And then it leads me down a rabbit hole where I spend hours on my phone and forget the initial task that I was supposed to do
Quite frankly, I turn them off. Level 1: I set notifications to off for work apps between 7pm and 8:30am, and weekends. Level 2: turn off desktop notification sounds (I leave badges) - I'm checking regularly anyway and that 5-20min wait time if I'm working on something else actually isn't noticed. Level 3 (Pro Max): delete work apps off phone, only work on laptop.
Only after doing it did it become clear that people don't actually notice, and I can work a lot less haggard.
Every single notification on my phone is off for this reason. I’ll respond when I can. If it is an emergency people know to call me.
Same here! I leave my phone in do not disturb 24/7. For work I don’t get that many notifications so I just leave them all on (except email) but I know there are settings to control what notifications you get and when.
I turned almost all notifications off . Especially news and social media. Deleted LinkedIn and other so called scrolling apps. With the new iOS update grayed my apps as well. I can report less excitement to open all the apps i see and use only what’s necessary. Recommend others with similar condition to try something similar.
I silence a lot of notifications on my personal devices especially at work, but in terms of work devices - I ignore Team stuff except from my boss, like I read it and just mark as unread and get to it when I can. At least for me, the expectation isn’t to answer everything super fast unless it’s like “is this meeting still happening?”
It is very difficult to find large chunks of unexpected time to work so I try to buckle down when I have that. If your manager is part of the issue (or large team chats), try talking to your manager and mute team chats.
Yes! This world has too many popups demanding immediate attention. I think I had coping mechanisms that worked “good enough” but were finally overwhelmed by the constant pings/notifications etc. I just ignore most instant messages, texts, emails until I have time to go look at them. Sometimes I get so far behind in checking them, I just give up and don’t try to catch up. People get annoyed. But I just don’t have a choice. As much as people hate meetings, If you want my attention, you’re gonna need to setup a meeting with me. I’d love to get rid of Teams/IM. It’s too much!
turn off everything except notifications for appointments.
On my iPhone I have different “Focus modes” for work, private, etc. That allows me to only see relevant notifications during my day - Outlook + Slack during “Work”; WhatsApp and Gmail during my off time.
I also build in plenty of non-distraction time during the work day when I need to get stuff done. Means all notifications are off and I set everything on “Do not disturb.” If there’s something truly urgent, my colleagues know to call me.
Apart from that, I try to minimize notifications as much as possible. My default state is for apps to have their notifications turned off.
I have same with my Gmail notifications on my phone, chat and text mastications. I have put everything else on silent except Gmail because that's where my daycare sends stuff but it's overwhelming for sure
Windows has a Focus time feature if your work computer is a PC.
You may have iPhone but on my Android I have an app called "minimalist" which prevents the pop-ups from happening. It can put timers on specific apps. It makes all the pretty graphics of each app into just text. You can favorite certain apps to be on the front but then the other ones you have to swipe for an extra step to see all of them. Etc.
For me, the problem isn’t my phone because I’ve turned off notifications. It’s my computer. Teams constantly pops up when I’m working on stuff it’s so distracting. I have teams on my phone for that reason. I can have the notifications off, but have it open and have it completely off on my computer so it doesn’t pop up. I also schedule myself concentration time and use do not disturb mode.
