Hi guys ,
I am in a US project in Accenture. We have long calls in the night timings. My other teammate has backed out saying she won't attend any calls as she got some medical condition so she won't attend long calls which extend till 9:30.Other teammate is a junior. The managers are expecting me to join all the calls. No help I am getting. And they all being Tamil, I think some partiality is going on between them.Even our onsite lead is of no use.She expects me to attend long calls.
What should I do .pls suggest?

Amen. Our clients pay us a ton. I’m not a stickler on optics of departure times on Thursdays, but any deliverable from email to final report needs to be excellent. Grammar is table stakes, not even close to the definition of excellence
I’m a M and I ask people underneath me to double check my emails. And I do the same thing for them.
Business writing is extremely important. It’s not a hierarchy thing - I expect a second level of review from everyone.
Why don’t you download Grammarly
I AM that manager 😁
👋
Yeah I’m that person too. There is absolutely no excuse for an email to go to a client with errors, excess words or to be unclear in the ask or content. And if it comes from my address it will absolutely be edited before sending.
Grammar I get but had a lead who would be dictating rewording changes to the analyst in our hour long status meeting. Will never work for him again
Amen to that
If you can’t get the basica right - what about your other deliverables!
Quality check your own work, then this won’t happen! Easy!
Off duty at the time of typing this - so, ok!
I get it if you’re a first year analyst and having managers review your emails, especially if it’s their first project. But this happened to me as an experienced hire (4 yrs) under a manager who treated me like I was in my first job out of college. This person took out pleasantries and reworded my writing style, without any change to the context of the email. It was infuriating and I ended up rolling off because I couldn’t take this person’s micromanagement. Thank god because I work best under autonomy, not someone breathing down my neck and reviewing and revising every single thing I produce. And all my projects after that I’ve been lucky enough to avoid this kind of behavior from superiors, thank god
How would you deal with a manager that more often than not sends emails with grammatical errors to the client? English is his second language, although he speaks it fine
Very carefully. Assess if there is any issue on the clients part - how strong the relationship is and if there has been any feedback. If it's a strong relationship and no-issue has been raised, may be okay. I assume client knows that English is not the mgrs first language.
Depending on your relationship, you could offer to proof them, saying just a couple quick tips. However - I'd tread super lightly here depending on the person. It's not really in your role to get in between the mgr and the client but if you can do it in a natural way, try going for it. (and if you get the go ahead, don't totally rewrite - just fix the errors - at this point the client might be used to it).
To follow up...how to be better at emails? Any recommendations on improving
-put your ask up front - why are you sending the email
-shorter is better, both words and thoughts
-bullet points can be your friend
-strategic bolding (eg due dates)
-think about the timing of your email - send during business hours. Try and not send bad news at the end of the day - should be during full swing operational hours (and maybe preceded by a phone call)
-check your cc list
-have someone proofread.
I write my first draft, chop it all up - moving my last sentence first, taking out rambling sentences. I don't get proofed but I am confident in my writing skills at this point. Reports I absolutely have a second reviewer.
No.
Rewording an email 10 times just to send something like this:
“Hi - I wanted to connect check-in on the deliverable I we sent over across to you yesterday”
How do any of you actually get things done when you’re wasting time on grammar checks? I get if the email is super important or going to many people, but seems like a massive waste of time to aim for perfection in all communications.
