Here are some suggestions:
Plan a nature scavenger hunt at a local park or nature preserve
Set up a backyard camping trip complete with tents, s'mores, and ghost stories
Take a day trip to a nearby zoo, aquarium, or museum
Have a family game day with board games, card games, and outdoor games like frisbee or soccer
Try out a new recipe together and have a family cooking competition
Camps, pay for camps.
Commenters here are like, "Spend money!" assuming you can. 😂
We have few kids between ages 7-11 in the house. And during spring break, i also don't want them laying around. So I'm in the same situation, AND without money (🤷♀️ I'm currently looking for a job).
I need FREE activities. We've been doing scavenger hunts, neighborhood walks, learning to ride bikes, cooking together, etc.
Something that i personally do is ask each kid EVERY morning, "What's the 1 productive thing you are gonna do today?"
I started this question a few months ago bc i was exhausted and didn't want to choose/think.
I heard their answers and saw life skills development.
I allowed the kids to say ANYthing,
"Create a video for YouTube,"
"Practice soccer moves outside,"
"Help dad clean his office"
Now, i still ask them that question on weekends, and right now i asked it during spring break (daily).
What i like about this question: kids don't resist the activities BECAUSE they chose the activities. In contrast, they're motivated. I just have to make sure they push through when things get tough.
Yesterday the 11 yr old said, "I wanna do my laundry today to get it outta the way" and i almost fainted.
We've been doing a lot more cooking which has been fun and engaging! also productive since I don't have to cook lol. Alos parks! Spend time at parks, that helps a lot
