Does anyone know why turn over at Amazon is so high? I have an interview with them next week and want to know who people don’t make it past 2 years. (From what I have heard here)

Demanding work, long hours, and you can pick your next job and salary with FAANG as your most recent bulletpoint.

E2 kudos to you for not replying snarky to that. Nice to see nice responses 👍

Demanding hours, grueling workload along with the hours, low pay and benefits compared to the other Big Tech companies, and Bezos has a reputation of being cheap.

Those are the generalities, at least.

I've heard of people being on some teams that are chill and have great WLB, but others are worse than consulting.

As an anecdote, I interviewed at AWS several months ago and asked the interviewer (this was the first round) what he thought the key skill to success was and he immediately said time management. That was a pretty big red flag for me.

like

It’s just because it’s a constant roller coaster. You interview for one job and accept it and six weeks later when you start the scope of that role may have changed entirely. People (even consultants) are sometimes just not satisfied with the organized chaos they encounter when they get here. In my experience it’s like consulting but with less centralized decision making, and vastly different working styles than most are accustomed to outside of tech. There’s a plateau that you also hit at an L6 level and you compete vigorously to get noticed for L7 promotions, which go to people who in many cases have been here longer, but in cases are less capable than new hires. My two cents and only an n=1 so take it with a grain of salt.

Amazon is great company for shareholders not employees WLB. Most people get in, get great experience and leave voluntarily or forced. It feels like a consulting firm with less travel but just as cut throat.

like

They are an SOB company, demanding everything from their workers and not really giving adequate compensation on return.

The grass is only greener over the septic tank.

likefunny

My friend works at Amazon and she and her coworkers hate it. Poor leadership, long working hours, no WLB. The only good thing is the pay.

like

No WLB, bad culture and great exit options at 2 year mark.

The initial stock and bonus allotment you get matures in two years. The idea is that you’d have picked a different position in the company/moved up by then and gotten an additional RSUs and bonus.
They built attrition into their salary. And even though base salary is low, their RAU allotment and sign-on bonuses are all very high.

like

RAU is a typo. It should be RSU, my bad 🤗
RSU = Restricted Stock Units. So when you join Amazon, you are given stock that matures over two years and a bonus that matures over two years.
After two years, your only incentive to stay is the base salary, which when people jump ship.

The obsolescence is by design, Amazon offers huge incentives for high performers to stay.

Also, their TC is higher than FB and Google at comparable levels.

With that said, a lot of Fortune 20s are benchmarking their compensation models against Amazon so you can go to any of those giants and expect similar TC these days.

likehelpful

I heard it's a lot of work but they pay well.

like

RSUs typically don’t automatically refresh like other big Tech companies unless you get promoted or move to a new position.

The combination of Work Culture and incentives create a very high burnout environment.

like

I wouldn’t say that last part is all the way correct. With Deloitte on my resume I’m certainly getting an incredibly high interview rate, but even certain roles at EY/PwC have turned me down without an initial interview (pre-pandemic)

like

Figured that was coming. I had some good interviews and got good signs, but then things stalled.

Does it vary by business group? Tech vs AWS vs Retail?
