Between 50,000 and 1M.
Depends where you live.
But 1M wasn’t unreasonable? It’s an exaggerated statement. It’s annoying when people ask about money with zero context of the part of the world they live.
Partner is probably out of the question to be honest. The fact that you are asking tells me this path was not part of the process for bringing you on either, and that is the most telling sign for you. MD is definitely a possibility and comp is nice (starting at 300k) but not close to what partners make.
Is there a partner path? 15
Is there a partner path is another question after 15 years experience outside B4.
How much a MD makes in SF area?
Actually know a couple of individuals who made this move. A few things:
1) it’s a good decision if you are already committed to leaving your current firm. Even if it doesn’t work out at B4, you’ll likely have more leverage in negotiating the compensation for your next role.
2) If you’re already close to the SM level, it’s really doubtful whether you can jump on the partner track just based on approximate age. I’ve heard that there just isn’t enough time to pay back the buy-in and earn more after a certain point.
3) Your first year is going to suck, and your rating will likely suck too. Too much will be new or done differently for you to be able to perform to the best of your ability.
Best of luck to you
Just make sure you have a very clear understanding of job expectations. A manager position outside b4 isn't automatically equivalent to a manager position in b4. Obtaining new work is a component of both levels.
