I know at least one successful person I know refused to give details. You should try to resist. You can negotiate better if you have other offers. Also mail/ call govt that firms are still asking for compensation documents.
I'd prefer not to provide confidential documents. Just as you don't publish the annual pay for your partners and staff, I'm not comfortable discussing how much my current firm pays its staff. I would be happy to discuss the value I bring and hopefully we can agree on a suitable salary and bonus structure moving forward. Rest assured, should I come to work there, I will treat your confidential data with the same respect. "
Ask your recruiter for their w-2. 2hen they act puzzled, say "oh I thought we were asking inappropriate questions". tell them to fuck off
Tell them you'll provide your W2 if they share compensation details for your peer set. Otherwise, no.
^ Or not that keen on KPMG upon realizing they intend to systematically underpay people
I stopped interviewing with KPMG when they said they could not proceed without my salary history. I told them I'm interested in the future and not the past
Got a 40% raise coming to booz from ACN because I demanded to be paid what I'm worth
It's not illegal yet, thought I read today this goes into effect November this year. Nonetheless I would push back asking why they need this information before an offer
Here's the thing - did you lie when they asked you what you make?
Its not about hiding SM1 ... its one salary built upon another low salary and then cumulatively after 5 years you realize that you are super underpaid in the industry.
No -- that's ridiculous. You don't have to submit that. They should pay fair market value and it shouldn't matter what you make. I would move along if you get pushback.
Hell, even if you lied it shouldn't matter. They should be willing to pay you what they think you're worth... If you want more than what they think they can make off you less margin, they shouldn't be employing you.
Say "I'm sorry, but I consider my current salary to be privileged information I only share with my accountant. I'm really interested in adding value to KPMG due to _____. I hope that you can respect my wishes due to your core value of respect for the individual. I'm looking forward to moving along with the hiring process."
I really don't know when this shit started with asking for W2's, but I would NEVER provide one. Pay me what I'm worth, not what I make now.
Being underpaid will eat away at you. Manage to find the stones that SC1 has and don't disclose. It's not worth losing the network and reputation you've built internally to be dissatisfied with your comp.
Funny how corporations change their tunes about "free markets" as soon as free markets are no longer in their interests- bail outs, trade, etc...
If you are in MA or NY, this is illegal, but other than that, can't wait to see what others have to say
If I recall correctly, no I did not lie. May be off by less than 1k as I was trying to roll in my recognition awards. They did ask for my target bonus so that should count for something right? 🤔
If you feel pressured to give a figure always give total compensation (base+bonus+other awards+heck even 401K match if you need to inflate more)
I think if you didn't lie, then you have nothing to hide. You've told them what your target is... just make sure you stick to it. Let them know you won't consider any offers that don't meet your target criteria...
