Take the job, 9 to 5 it, and keep the hunt for a better opportunity going. Worst case scenario: you have a job. Best case scenario: you have a job and land a better one.
Health and pharma experience will guarantee you never starve in this business. Take the money and keep looking. Agencies show no loyalty to creatives these days so don’t even bother feeling guilty if you quit after a few months. Just say it wasn’t a good fit and keep on moving. Good luck to you and congrats on a good interview.
Selling insurance used to suck, too. Geico, Allstate, State Farm and Progressive have all made iconic campaigns.
Take the gig. Who knows what rules you might break.
Come over to the dark side. it’s never boring, you can put money in the bank, and you may learn to love it. Been in med ad for 20 years. Every day feels like i have a real purpose. Good luck!
I switched to pharma two years ago and the money and stability is worth it. I literally have recruiters reaching out to me every week. Don’t think of it as medical copywriting—you’re not writing prescription labels. It should be more about finding creative opportunity within the messaging. Assuming you’d be B2C, people still want things that make them laugh or feel something. That’s how the best pharma is done.
Take the gig and don't look to your job for your creative outlet. Whether you're pushing pills or sports cars or good causes, it will never be a true (or satisfying) expression of your talent. And that's fine. It's just a job.
If you’re afraid, you can refrain from updating your LinkedIn should you get the job and continue to look elsewhere while you work, learn some skills specific to health, and pay the bills. If your book still needs work, continue working on that with spec or side projects.
My advice is to take it. These are not the best of times and it is a good skill set to develop. But don’t stay in it, exclusively, for more than a year. It’s best to not get pigeon-holed in pharma when you’re young.
