Ignore your supervisor wholeheartedly and with your full chest! Your PTO is completely yours to unplug. None of us are so important that our jobs can’t do without us for 2 weeks. Your firm could have laid you off in the thick of a project and your team would have figured it out. Set a clear boundary and stand by it as long as you make sure you give ample notice before vacation and many reminders as you get close to the date, have a transition plan, and clear your plate.
You're supervisor is an idiot and you might want to remind him of certain laws.
I took an entire month off for my honeymoon but I gave everyone pretty much 6 months notice and the last couple weeks I had prepared my boss and team with everything they would need to know to maintain and advance my work.
I think a good rule of thumb is a months notice per week off, if possible. But in general, unless you’re making partner money, you can take time off and actually disconnect. If you’re so vital that they can’t operate without you, they better be compensating you that way
This. I go no-contact, but I always make sure I have appropriate backfills
They should know that PTO means "prepare the others" and I never take my work phone on PTO unless I know I have something to do while away.
I went to Italy for 10 days at the end of August just before Labor Day. Work phone stayed on my dresser. Laptop stayed on my desk.

How long of a career are we talking about?
He’s an intern
I have a colleague that has this as his out of office while on PTO. “I am on PTO with my family, if you have an emergency please call 911”.
Self-care is critical to one’s health. Not taking a vacation ridiculous. I used to be like I got to work all the time because that is what my parent told me to do. When I started taking days off, it made a difference. These companies don’t care about their employees.
???
You know the answer to your own question. If everything was communicated prior to you taking your vacation, your boss obviously has some issues. It's not uncommon to take a 2 week vacation
Tell me you work in the USA without telling me....
OP. Who do you work for? The answer will explain a lot.
There are firms that believe you are employed for them 24/7. Others are much more reasonable.
If you planned your PTO well in advanced, aligned with project management expecations and covered all risks from your PTO, then you need to think about what you want.
You can never go wrong in choosing being respected, appreciated and happiness.
Good luck.
Just for that stress your supervisor unleashed on you, you should take another 2 weeks
Did you have a back-up plan while you were out ?

EY4 true, but if it has been approved, then they are entitled to do what they want in their time off without checking in.
This is crazy. If your time off was approved, then there should be zero expectation for you to answer a call while you were on vacation.
Your company knew that you were leaving because they approved it, if they didn’t take their appropriate measures to make sure the job was OK, that’s on them.
Chief
Still not clear if you explicitly set expectations before leaving for vacation. If you did, with supervisor agreeing, you should very kindly explain that one on one. If it wasn’t crystal clear, it on you.
KPMG 2 - you’re right, I wouldn’t block my bosses number, but my work phone wouldn’t be on to begin with so I would never know that they were trying to contact me. I’ve had this exact conversation with my leadership team in the past where they have asked if it was OK to contact me if they have any questions while I’m out and I have said no. I’m like if you think you’re going to need me then I will take PTO at a different time.
I don’t want to need to be responsible for checking email, or checking text messages. I don’t have to worry about not drinking so I can be sober enough to tackle work questions. Hell, I don’t even want to need to be awake at the hours that they’re operating in.
The whole point of a vacation is to separate from work and to mentally relax and reset. You can’t do that if work is stepping akin and crossing the line.
You do you.
Welcome to what is called a normal vacation in Europe

This is the reason people burn out, they never really unplug.
OP from 🇮🇳 and Supervisor from 🇮🇳
This thread is wild
I disagree with a lot of the folks here. Obviously, it's not fair if they call to yell at you, apply pressure, or dump a crisis in your lap. But, if you're the lynchpin on time sensitive things, that's what will make you survive the next round of layoffs. Don't call in looking for it, but it's worth 30 minutes a day to answer e-mails that are holding them up. Your boss, colleagues, and clients will be eternally grateful. If you force them to discover that they can, in fact, manage without you, watch out next time they are pouring over the headcount spreadsheet agonizing over which rows to delete.
