I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

It’s made me feel more confident more than anything! I struggled in school so passing this exam made me feel like I know what I am doing. It helped me put the work I was doing into visual concepts and gave me a little more understanding into my role in the grand scheme of the organization.
However, personally, I am looking to shift away from HR.. It’s still cool to have the extra letters on my resume. 🙂
This is great to hear. I feel the same way. It def gave me lots of confidence and I am really glad that I got it.

Got the PHR, biggest take away was learning about all the collective bargaining laws etc. tbh, I don’t think it helped me get any of my HR jobs but it was a huge confidence boost and a speaking point
Have yet to see the point of it, most I've asked recruiter wise, they don't value it. But I'm still trying to decide if it'd help me without a degree in HR feel more secure in my knowledge.
Studying for the certification exposed me to more of HR than my role provided. I was a generalist but it was for a small healthcare org. It has not helped me in any of my roles nor has it helped my network. I will say to the outside world, I’m more distinguished lol!
It gave overall deeper knowledge of HR areas and concepts that are applicational and helpful as a reference! It gave me confidence and the ability to be more marketable to move in my career! Additionally, I’ve been more intentional now to stay abreast of industry knowledge since you’re required to take continuous educational courses to maintain recertification and that’s been helpful too!
It does give your resume an extra boost when applying to leadership roles.
Deeper knowledge and understanding. It also helped me with my promotion after 3 years with the company.
