For those of you who are certified (SHRM or PHR), what was your biggest takeaway from getting your certification? How has this helped you today in your HR career?

It’s made me feel more confident more than anything! I struggled in school so passing this exam made me feel like I know what I am doing. It helped me put the work I was doing into visual concepts and gave me a little more understanding into my role in the grand scheme of the organization.

However, personally, I am looking to shift away from HR.. It’s still cool to have the extra letters on my resume. 🙂

This is great to hear. I feel the same way. It def gave me lots of confidence and I am really glad that I got it.

Got the PHR, biggest take away was learning about all the collective bargaining laws etc. tbh, I don’t think it helped me get any of my HR jobs but it was a huge confidence boost and a speaking point

Have yet to see the point of it, most I've asked recruiter wise, they don't value it. But I'm still trying to decide if it'd help me without a degree in HR feel more secure in my knowledge.

Studying for the certification exposed me to more of HR than my role provided. I was a generalist but it was for a small healthcare org. It has not helped me in any of my roles nor has it helped my network. I will say to the outside world, I’m more distinguished lol!

It gave overall deeper knowledge of HR areas and concepts that are applicational and helpful as a reference! It gave me confidence and the ability to be more marketable to move in my career! Additionally, I’ve been more intentional now to stay abreast of industry knowledge since you’re required to take continuous educational courses to maintain recertification and that’s been helpful too!

It does give your resume an extra boost when applying to leadership roles.

Deeper knowledge and understanding. It also helped me with my promotion after 3 years with the company.

I understand the whole “underpaid and overworked” argument but I feel if your on a good engagement team with appropriate support it’s really not that bad.. would love some input though. Is it really worth sticking it out till manager still? Is it better to jump ship early on? Let’s debate!

What advise do you have moving forward with a career. I left my employer after18 yrs in June. my boss was laid off before covid, they didnt post his job for 2 years. hey everyone! I'm seeking advice from others that pivoted in a similar way. I graduated with a bachelor's in CS in 2020 and started a data consultant role right after. at the time, I wanted to explore the data analytics/science space, but I've since realized that I prefer core engineering and non-client facing roles. what approach did you take to switch back to tech/industry? I've applied to a good number of SDE roles, but I'm not getting many responses.

Who has diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging housed under their HR function? How have you found that to work?

As a DEI professional it’s so hard to work within a function people don’t normally trust. I have to build that trust independently since HR historically works on the side of managing employees and protecting the business, while DEI is supposed to provide that safety to employees and to hold the org accountable on behalf of marginalized communities and employees.

Does anyone have the 2020 SHRM books for sale or to borrow? My job won’t contribute towards my certification. I’ve already paid for my test. I have the books from 2015 but I’d like to study from the 2020. I tried finding them online to purchase but sellers of affordable books aren’t responding.

Finally got a job offer to be an HR manager (I’d be a department of one) after 5 weeks unemployed of hard searching and connecting with recruiters. However, when I told them my salary range of $75-95k (my last job was 95k) they told me the budget was 65-80 which was fine. Verbal offer was $70k. I feel a little disrespected by this offer and want to counter with $80k. There’s many red flags already but UI may require I accept in which case I’m gonna keep job searching despite the salary. Advice- My team were all given a raise in March except me. I brought it up to my manager who recently started. First reaction was I am still new and a raise wasn’t warranted. I told him 2 other recruiters on my team started when I did. He said he would need to look into it. Today he told me 3 of my HM’s don’t feel supported (despite having the 2nd most hires) and I could either resign or go on a PIP. I’m the only minority on my team have double the req load and supporting the most dept.
