For Valentine’s Day my fiancé and I went out to dinner. We decided not to do any gifts this year since we have a lot of trips planned and saving for the wedding. I had a $75 gift card that I decided to contribute for dinner and figured he would pay the rest since it was Valentine’s Day. The next day he venmoed me for the half of the remaining bill. We usually split everything but this one threw me off guard. Anyone else experience not being taken out anymore after dating a long time?

Slightly different sit, my wife and I spend from a joint account.

We discuss big expenses based on family needs. We get discretionary funds each and that's that.

I do not understand how a married couple's finances are not evenly split regardless of income.

Even if one makes more than the other, they both consume 50/50, no?

Wow. That’s a bold move. I guess there is a price on love 😂

Ummm, that’s a no for me dawg.

Yeah that’s pretty cheap, especially for a fiancé. And it’s not about the gender roles at all. I am a female and I only ever use venmo to pay my bf for rent+bills and we normally split cost of airfare and hotels. Otherwise, we each treat each other to meals, alternate paying for groceries and just assume over time it’s all even.

So I find this behavior pretty non generous, especially for a Valentine’s Day.

But I don’t know your relationship, if that’s just a normal to count every penny 🤷‍♀️

like

Yes. For me it would be ok because if I went out with my fiancé now wife out on Valentine’s Day I am taking her out. I don’t expect her to pay anything for that Valentine’s Day dinner. But that is just me.

Now you know that he considers gift cards communal property with zero cash value. So for the next gift exchange get him a gift card to you two’s fav restaurant, have him take you and use said giftcard, then venmo him half the remaining bill.

like

Sounds like a communication breakdown to me. After being together for a while, you think your expectations are understood but he might have a completely different expectation in his head. Be clear that you’re grateful for him but also want to be taken out more.

like

Of course! If I were in your situation, I would also decline the request and send a laughing emoji but that’s probably not the best advice

like

Did he not get laid that night, and was bitter the next day and venmo you?

like

You slept with him and pay 3/4 of the bill

dam. lol is he gonna do that while married too? I mean everybody handles their personal finance differently but sheesh lol. this feels like some sort of underhanded message 😅

like

Did he ask for half of the total or half after the $75?

like

Any chance he forgot you did that?

He sounds like he still has his confirmation money.

It’s a weird way of thinking which I have come across before. Some people consider the value of a gift card a coupon or something you got for free.

I used to buy discounted gift cards from Costco to save money when I was taking my ex girlfriend out to dinner. We used to go out to eat a lot and it can add up. Surprisingly, Costco would often have some pretty decent choices.

Instead of splitting the bill when we went out, we used to just alternate between who would pick up the check. What I noticed was that when I used gift cards, she would often expect me to pay for the next time we went out as well. When I used a gift card she thought that the meal was free somehow, even though I had paid for the gift cards to begin with.

Or if she was feeling frugal (which was often) because of a large purchase she recently made, she would ask me if I had any gift cards left, as if we could save money by taking some of the cards I bought.

As a result, I stopped buying as many gift cards because it wasn’t worth saving the 20%- 25% if I wasn’t even getting credit for paying for them to begin with.

Do you set up any standards when you date with anybody? I’m currently dating with a Mexican man. He is older than me 10 years old (I thought 6 when we first met). His job is construction and made less than me. He is insecure about the money but I’m not really. But, the one bothering me is that he is illegal immigrant. Other than that, He is a cure, nice and independent guy. When dating, he split money/ or want to cover for me. He cares about people around. I am happy but not sure about LT.

Approaching 30 now and living with roommates in NYC, but considering moving to my own place. Has anyone found that living with roommates is better than living alone? Conventional wisdom says no.

I’m a pretty outgoing person and i like to have people around. I also like my roommates cause we chill. So I’m really scared of moving in alone and being lonely. Increase in rent will be marginal and totally affordable.

Once when I was waiting tables, I had a guy pay me cash. The change was 45 cents, which I didn't give back to him because like who wants that.
