From RN to elementary teacher... would I be trading one stressful job for another? Nursing has left me exhausted and disillusioned, but I’ve always felt drawn to teaching young kids. I’m considering going for a special needs certification too. If you've transitioned into teaching from a different role, do you recommend it?

Have you considered being a school nurse?

And no more college

I would suggest becoming a sub to get a feeling of being ard kids. Even ask a principal to shadow a teacher to see if that is what you want to do.

That’s actually a very smart idea. Education is not what it used to be so best go into it with eyes wide open. 👀

Districts hire nurses- fyi

I think it’s as equally stressful but in different ways. More perks in the school, but less pay than nursing that’s for sure.

likehelpful

3 words: June, July, and August.

Any questions?

funnylike

Not always, between in services that are in summer, and the fact that a lot of schools get out 2nd week of June and go back the third week of August or sooner. Not June, July and August anymore.

My district is always looking for Nursing Instructors for both HS and Adult programs. Check out vocational education school districts.

likesmart

Yes! Most districts around here have a vocational school where nurses teach. Great idea!

Definitely try to get approval to shadow some teachers, particularly special needs if that’s where you want to go. Teaching has changed drastically over the past 10 years. Lots more behavioral issues and demands are extremely high. Special needs classrooms often involve teacher injuries due to extreme behaviors from students. Just be aware of what you are getting into!

like

Don't do it. At least in nursing you have more flexibility and better pay. In teaching you are stuck with the schedule (even if you don't have work for the summer -for which you are not paid.). Try something else.

like

We get summer pay , but our pay is spread. Otherwise it is Sept- June

Never worked in a hospital setting, but teaching is draining and can be all consuming … you’re never really “off”. IMO you’d be trading one stressful job for another one with less pay, less respect and much less job security.

I returned to teaching elementary after 20 years of trying various other occupations - including nurse's aide/med tech. I have been VERY happy to be back in the classroom; HOWEVER, the stress is real. It's just a different kind of stress now.

School wants to pull more and more of your time. Admin seems to think that, since teachers are salary, they can take much of our home time also. YOU have to decide how much extra time you're willing to give, and not let teaching dominate your family life.

Paperwork, especially in special ed, seems endless. That stress is real. I don't teach SPED, but my friends complain about the changes in that field over 20-30 years ago.

SPED students now have all kinds of legal rights that require us to make extra efforts to meet. I'm a classroom teacher and can say some class lessons seem to have to be tailored around the needs of my SPED students' more than those of the non-SPED students. I try to have extra projects/assignments available for the non-SPED students to work on while I focus on meeting the individual education plans (IEP) of my SPED students. This requires extra preparation on my part. I can only imagine the extra requirements placed on the SPED teachers.

Classroom management (aka classroom discipline) is another thing which has changed with the years. Today's students are NOT the same animal as when I went through school. And each school has it's own administration which might or might not have a handle on school discipline as a whole that supports the teachers. Just do a little bit of research on that one and you'll see what I mean. I'm in a lovely school where misbehavior is handled quickly and decisively, so I don't have any troubling behaviors that are more than momentary. But talk to teachers in any schools to which you are applying to learn what they experience in their classrooms.

I hope this helps in your thinking process. I have been very happy being back in the classroom. I hope you are happy and content with whichever decision you make.

Hi! I am a school counselor— who has been working in the education system since 2013 (at the time was an associate), my mom and mother in law and all my aunts are nurses, I feel it is equally as stressful, if not more! Have you considered becoming a school nurse? You could continue your profession, but work with kiddos. I think you would be transitioning from one stressful job to another. I see our amazing teachers working their tails off and they are amazing (I am sure you would be too) but they are so burnt out. Unless this is a dream that you are extremely passionate about!

Making a career switch can feel overwhelming, but if you’ve always felt drawn to teaching, it could be just what you need! Nursing is tough on the body and mind, so teaching might offer a better balance. Special needs teaching comes with its own challenges, but it’s incredibly rewarding. If you’re passionate about kids and making a difference, the rewards might outweigh the stress.

There are also nurses that sit and monitor seizures, Intravenous feedings, etc. for students in special education classrooms as well.

like

Then you'd get two half (weak) pensions. Teaching would be a different type of stress because you have many kids going on at the same time, and really unrealistic results. Nursing, I'd imagine, you could hurt a person or they could die. Perhaps not as many people at once and not as many unrealistic expectations. Example, a person on a hospital bed would not be expected to run a marathon, despite our students that can't read or do any arithmetic can perform amazing educational projects.

I was an RN and transitioned to Education. Stress level way down. I still pull in over 100K a year not to mention the time off I have to spend with my family.

I taught in Michigan, my high pay was 82,000

Startups and Entrepreneurship I had no idea how to trade, but I trusted the right people. Fast forward a few months, I’m earning smart and living better. Forex is real — with the right mentorship.
