Fears of a recession are reasonably causing people to take a second look at their job security. Seeing as many lawyers are working in specialty tax within PA how many of you are worried about a potential slowdown/layoffs within specialty tax? If not why do you feel you won’t be as affected? That seems incredibly petty of the partner. From what I can see, you did everything right and then some - you're not obligated to provide those documents and instructions. If that's how they respond (/don't respond) to your courtesy, I think it's pretty clear you made the right decision to leave. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Basically, just teaching everyone else to walk out instead of giving notice no matter what's on the agenda to help the clients. Of course it also means you can file unemployment for the remainder of your notice since you have documented evidence of your offer to keep working. Jus sayin. I'd apply anyway just to stick it to them.
I've never been allowed to finish out my notice at a law firm. I've learned to tender my resignation around noon on a Friday (ideally on payday or the end of the pay cycle) and I'm usually escorted out at the end of the day. Same process with "layoffs". The explanation always given is that they don't want "disgruntled" employees opening them up to liability ie to access/save information or client lists or sabotage their work product in some way. That's been the case regardless of the size of the firm/company whether I've been there for 6mo or 10yrs. Bottom line is there is no such thing as loyalty. You work. They pay for your time. Nothing else matters. Secure your references, finish up your dr appts & whatever else you need before giving notice and expect that to be your last day.
@paralegal 4 Another piece of advice? You work for lawyers. There isn't one of them that will give you a negative reference or keep you from willfully gaining employment. (Unless your world is small enough that they ended up ibeing law school buddies or something, but even then its a longshot) They may not be willing to give you a reference if asked but they won't badmouth you if they're contacted. They're also more willing to have a phone call than an email...unless it's basic questions like yes/no and from/to dates. Lawyers have an unmatched paranoia about putting anything in writing much less sign their name to it 😊
That is messed up! Be glad you left. I wish you the best in your next adventure. It is the nature of the beast of law. There must be an elective class in law school on how to be a douchy boss! Just remember, lawyers aren't business people and they really don't know how to run one.

I have to differ on that one. I have worked with one of the best attorneys yet, and this attorney know what they are doing. The attorney runs the firm, owns firms, handles themself in a righteous manner, treats the employees with respect, and is very honest about if we need improvements in areas of our work. I have not ever came across an attorney like that one. I still get contract job from this attorney. Have you ever had a wonderful working experience with an attorney?
Please leave a glassdoor review.
I cant imagine the unique life experiences that got postponed or even missed due to work during these last 5 years for them to do this to you.
Yes! More of us need to post reviews on glassdoor

Wow, I'm sorry that happened to you. It makes me realize how fortunate I am to have had good attorneys to work for. I'm so very thankful my previous attorney and I when I was let go, we parted ways on good terms. I was very fortunate to have a very good previous attorney. She will go far in her business.
