Teaching vs practicing

Why on earth do you think you know my professional experience? I'm not mentioning a hypothetical situation. I'm qualified to accept any of those offers. Not my problem if you can't make up your mind about people being professionally skilled and having a relevant academic record at the same time.

like

Tenure? Right away? Or You mean tenure track assistant professor?

like

Here’s my thought, if you can make your name in research, considering you are going at a top research school, you can come to Google anytime and ask them as much as want! A lot of professors are doing that these days! But going from Google to Academia, hmm, I have not seen anyone!

like

Ooof that’s a toughy I’d imagine Google pays more and may be more exciting? You could pick Google and Adjunct on the side? If you value a slower paced environment and Academia then choose the tenure. If your younger I’d say Google cause you can always get the “teacher fix” through mentorship and management opportunities. Both come with job security , an excellent problem to have, Congrats either way ☺️

like

Yes! It's a tough choice! I'm working in academia for 8 years but most of my research is applied (enterprise/new tech). Both positions are in the same field/expertise. Getting the professorship would get me more funding opportunities (than I have now as a sub-class post-doc) and I can keep all my current contacts/research projects. Google can give me access to a better lifestyle (compensation). I am a mother (toddler), and I want to have one more child in 2-3 years. I feel anxious about who would I become in terms of focus/productivity. I'm a very committed person (easily exploitable), and I do need people to respect my time/well-being. I don't feel burnout fits my life anymore. I wouldn't blink about a google opportunity a few years ago. I need to figure this out this week, so I decided to ask here. I think that WLB is the main thing, and outreach opportunity at google. I imagine if I go up (it's a research position) I could open so many opportunities for research funding/programs at google. What I love the most about research freedom and mentoring is breaking barriers and opening doors, I would be happy in any role that would allow me to do it (academic or enterprise):

likesmart

Academia first. Get tenured, which can be very competitive but if you believe you can get it, great. Then go to Google thereafter. You can always go back to academia if you want I think. Just confirm that this is possible.

like

With these benefits and your valuing Wlb I'd say tenure track all the way. No guarantees with Google how your Wlb will be and all the reorgs that constantly happen

I’ve been with my current company for a little over 5 years now and since the start of the pandemic have been WFH. I absolutely love WFH and have always wanted a position in which I could WFH. There is talk of bringing everyone back to the office full time and that’s not what I would like to happen. I’ve been searching for a new position in which it would be a remote role. My current company also said I am maxed out in term of what they are willing to pay salary wise.
