Got an offer for ZS as a strategy generalist when I interviewed for P&LS. They said they the opening for that team was a level below me but that I could then specialize and move onto that team in the next year or so. Would that actually be possible?

Isn't this kind of the dream? You get the chance to try it out before actually specializing

like

Just another perspective: having broader exposure at ZS may trigger additional interest areas and allow you to GTM more effectively (due to your internal network and broader knowledge of ZS's capabilities)

like

Confirming this is true. You definitely would be able to try out other projects and then move into P&LS. It wouldn’t surprise me if you could even move into P&LS in less than a year. I agree with the above comment that this actually a better situation to be in

like

That’s great to hear!! Coming from big4, hearing “you’ll have the opportunity to move into/specialize/etc” always makes me nervous since a lot of the time it’s bs/very hard.
Thanks!!!

like

LOL as i had the exact opposite happen to me. Applied for generalists but interviewed for P&LS. The space is growing a ton and you’ll be able to work on those types of projects regardless of being in the space. After a year officially move into it.

like

Second ZS2’s point - they’ll be more than willing to meet with you and discuss your interests - also since it’s growing so fast they’ll naturally need people like you to staff

like

yeah I think generalist is better, you can mess around for a bit. Even if you know it's exactly what you want, doesn't hurt to build your network outside the space as well.

But OP, MAKE SURE you're proactive in staffing. since you're a generalist you can get pulled into anything since we're short on staffing to begin with. ZS is not very siloed since we're smaller than Big 4 so lines between BC/BO/BT blur sometimes. You could end up on like tech or heavy analytics as an SIP so if that's not what you want to do, then you need to find the right PAMs that will pull you into the projects you want. Be careful not to push anyone's buttons though.

like

Step lower is the red flag make sure pay is not a step lower. Negotiate.

like

Oh no, the position for that team was a step Lower which is why they’re bringing me on as a generalist. So I’m still at the right level with a reeeeaaal handsome bump from what I was at D

like

Thanks and Cheers Everyone! Here’s to making moves and taking control over your career!

Time for a celebratory mimosa

like

Definitely try out P&LS. Their projects and work hours can be brutal relative to the rest of the firm. DD and other strat projects are the ones that break people and cause them to leave.

like

Congrats OP. And welcome to ZS!

like

Thank you! Very excited to work with everyone and drive my career in the LS space!
