Obvious answer is lateral out instead of swimming against the current.
OP continued in comments this is a part of a growing culture shift at the firm and not for the better. It seems I am in the minority with one another associate. The last thing I want to do after a long day is go drive to an event and socialize with more lawyers. Our work does not come from lawyer referrals so this really makes no sense to me. I feel like if a firm is going to mandate this there should be some credit towards billable hour targets or something.

lmao lateral
This is the stuff I’d be willing to risk being fired over.

Seems weird if it's a demand/requirement as opposed to encouragement. Plus, not everyone is in a position to make billables, network nonstop, market, and somehow take care of themselves and their families mentally and physically. You do what you can when you can.
I'd shift one thing though. You're marketing yourself - not the firm. Those contacts you make stay with you when you leave and are more beneficial to you at any firm than to the current firm without you.
Thanks all for confirming what I knew.
We had a similar directive from the partners at my firm. It wasn’t exactly a mandate or requirement but definitely strongly encouraged.
I could see a mandate coming down if we don’t be more active.
That being said we are a small firm in a fairly small market and they want to build name recognition and awareness of who we are.
Look into whether your state bar has an advertising committee and see if that “counts.” I’m on mine and the commitment is less than an hour a month.
