“Tone policing is defined as "a conversational tactic that dismisses the ideas being communicated when they are perceived to be delivered in an angry, frustrated, sad, fearful, or otherwise emotionally charged manner." Managers striving to create a workplace based on equity and inclusion must understand how tone policing silences members of marginalized groups and allows discrimination to persist.” https://www-businessinsider-com.cdn.ampproject.org/c/s/www.businessinsider.com/how-to-identify-and-help-stop-tone-policing-in-workplace-2020-8?amp

You'd be surprised at some of the things I've overheard in the office. I think it's a lot of the older crowd frankly holding on to old stigmas and stereotypes.
I really hope you re-read what you just wrote so you can recognize just how stigmatizing that comment was. It’s terrible to assume that it’s the “older crowd” causing issues with racism and diversity. Making negative assumptions based on race is racism and based on age is ageism and it’s just as hurtful.
I wouldn't know about social work but I have met some seriously racist Therapists. Once a man told me he didn't see Black clients becasue he wanted to focus on people with "real issues." Whatever that means.
Agreed, I've met some questionable therapists over the year...training is needed but not always valued I've found
I think it's absolutely imperative to have diversity training. We don't even realize how deeply ingrained some of our habits are that hurt people, and this is always evolving and changing rapidly. Every year, there are going to be new facets and areas with which we need to adapt.
Yes, I have had to do diversity training this year. It's something that's required for all employees at my job. The training was pretty informative, and it was nice to learn about different cultures and backgrounds. I think it's important that everyone is aware of these things, so that we can all work together harmoniously.
I did one and I learned a lot about how to be more aware of my own biases and how to be more respectful of others. It was definitely a good experience, and I'm glad that my company is making an effort to be more inclusive.
I think it’s really important because everyone starts from different places and training is needed to reinforce company/ethical standards.
I don't see it as necessary either. I feel like we get enough education in the culture and media of our everyday lives. But also I understand some people live under a rock...some people don't get it, but they certainly should take accountability and learn themselves.
I love learning about different cultures. I can’t imagine anyone possibly knowing all the various ethnicities, countries, villages and tribes, religions, sexual preferences and gender identities in the world! There is always more to learn to help with understanding the world we live in and the careers we have chosen.
