To be honest, I think you 100% made the right move. The PTO may be significantly less, but all that time gained from a shorter commute (and the mental energy saved from less work) will give you more time to do the things you love during the work week. Unless you’re someone who frequently takes extended international vacations, etc I don’t think it makes much of a difference
I typically only use 10 to 15 days of PTO a year. This past summer though, I used about 20. I think I can make the 12 days PTO work, especially if my plan is to just work there until I get my MBA, and then move on.
It's just a short term inconvenience.
Cont. - But, I would go from 25 days PTO plus holidays, to 12 days PTO plus holidays. That's a huge difference, but is it worth it. If I were to get/take this job, how hard is it to transition back to industry/private? (I want to get my MBA, but my current employer is discouraging it, plus I don't really have the time in my current job.)
Obviously, the gov work would be significantly slower which would drive me crazy, but that is easily fixed by remembering I wouldn't have to deal with utilization anymore.
Upward movement is molasses in government.
My current work allows me to work with various government agencies and that is definitely something I see all the time.
I figure since I wouldn't plan to be there beyond what a typical promotion would take (gov probably would take significantly longer), I'd get my MBA and give myself a promotion.
