Let me guess… either Florida or Texas
I'm doing this now, first offer from insurance was 25k toward new roof replacement then subtract deductible and recoverable depreciation. Contractor is negotiating on my behalf and doing the dance with the adjustor.
We did about 10 years ago - a hail storm came through with minimal obvious damage so we didn't bother to call insurance. They came with the same story and in a weaker moment I did some cursory research on them and gave them a shot. They ended up convincing the adjuster that we needed new shingles on the entire roof.
As far as I can tell they did a great job and there was nothing out of pocket to us other than the deductible. I think we even ended up with a better quality shingle and it certainly looks better.
A few years later there was more hail with visible damage to the siding on two sides of the house. We called the same contractors and had a similar experience. It took longer than we would have liked that time due to supply issues but it ended up fine. Thankfully haven't needed anything else since then.
We still have the same house and there were no material changes to rates. Not sure if that would still be the case today.
When you use one of these contractors they will use all the insurance $$. They always make sure they do. When getting quotes it’s always best get atleast 3.

I used them for the quote 28k because I knew they’d max it out, not required to use them though. I got the check and said I’d do it myself. I gave a roofing buddy $2500 and a dual axle trailer, plus materials delivered to the job site. Made about 22k on the deal. It was side hustle work for him and some buddies. They are commercial flat roofers.
I’m in Illinois. I’ve had good experiences with storm chasers. Many of them have relationships with the insurance adjusters.
About 15 years ago, I needed a new roof. A storm chaser knocked on the door several weeks after a storm came through. I decided to give him a shot. Glad I did. Insurance paid for a whole new roof, gutters, and downspouts. About $20k. No impact to my premium.
In 2019, another storm came through and another guy knocked on the door. This time, I had him replace the roof on my home and two rental properties I have in the same neighborhood. Insurance paid for all three.
Several months later, my insurance agent said the company wanted to drop me. The issue was the two roofs on my home within a relatively short span of time. I asked him why did they pay for the second roof if they didn’t think it was necessary? Also, in the 30 years that I’ve been paying them premiums, I had only one other claim.
They decided to keep me, but they did raise my premium.

If you do this, will your insurance company non-renew you?

Thanks for the input. This roof is about 23 years old, though it’s in pretty decent condition. I live on the mountain side in UT. The house is quite large.
It sounds like this is sorta legit, I’m just thinking I was budgeting for 25-30k for a roof replacement this year or next so why not?
I seen a leak in my garage had 3 people come by to do a quote in 2020 during covid. The insurance sent me a small check with the depreciation value which it was 3,500 plus I had to pay my 1k deductible. The first one said I just have to pay my deductible. The 2nd person was not saying enough or selling his company. The 3rd person told me I didn’t have to pay the deductible as long as I put his sign in my yard for a month. He told me if I had State Farm & Allstate they don’t like replacing roof. I had Traveler’s and he was so happy. He told me he could get another 6k out of them. I’m like do what you have to do as long as I don’t have to pay anything. He did get the additional money and I kept my deductible. I was happy I didn’t have to come out of my pocket.
