Have you guys noticed that the 2020-2022 associates dress in expensive, gorgeous designer clothing and accessories daily? When I was a junior 20 years ago, juniors were raggedy AF we mostly had wrinkled suits & cheap shoes and dressed up only for client meetings. These new associates looking like models everyday to come in to do some diligence. Is it just my firm or what is going on? Are they taking selfies at their desk and acting like Cece Xie?? Do they not have loans?

I have not noticed this at all. But regardless, personally, I dressed up way more as a junior because it was exciting! I was poor and I had money to buy nicer clothes for the first time, was working in a fancy office for the first time. Now the excitement has long ago worn off and I dress like a comfortable slob. Let them have their fun.

I’m female and in Houston and haven’t noticed this specifically about juniors. It’s actually a couple female partners who have always worn the designer suits in my office. Most all females in my office have a couple nice handbags and diamond earrings though.

With our salaries, almost every attorney at the firm could buy several designer items if they wanted. Personally, I’d rather retire early and spend extra money on traveling. Maybe your juniors just have different priorities and aren’t saving up much money.

like

Hey look guys, it helps to feel good about yourself when you buy things that feel high quality. It tells you hey, I’m worth it, look how far I’ve come. If I keep up this work, I’ll only go farther.

If you’re talking about women, we get gifted luxury bags for our birthdays. Also luxury bags cost a lot less comparatively than they did before. For example, coach has a retail brand where bags cost $250 compared to their luxury line where bags are easily $1000. Other labels also have retail brands now because they couldn’t sustain themselves just selling luxury lines, think of Ralph Lauren. You can Google and look into this. More importantly, maybe they’re excited to be back in the office and making an effort. Look the part to be the part or whatever. MYOB!

like

I’d buy you guys bags if I could! My sister has given me 50% of my bags, my mom and best friend the other half. It’s pretty popular to give bags as gifts 😂

I blame Partner Track

My first job when I graduated in 05 was for a solo who paid me $37,500. But my office was in a wealthy area and the TJ Maxx there was stocked with really great high end stuff. There was also a shopping center with designer shops and some higher end mall shops and I’d go there on my lunch break looking for deals. That was the best dressed period of my life. I now many multiples of $37,500 and can’t dress like that anymore because I don’t have as much time to shop and even though my income is higher I have more financial responsibilities. Point is you don’t know where they’re getting their clothes from or what else they’ve got going on. Be glad they’re putting in the effort and you don’t have to look at sloppiness.

This is kind of firm-specific but the Latham and K&E summers are stunting like they all blew their first few paychecks on Fifth Avenue.

Ya, I wear banana republic, bonobos, gap, maybe a lulu polo, and I feel like one of snappier dressers in my office. Most of the other juniors wear this or even cheaper clothing.

Different peeps have different values. I am middle of the road on clothes - buy nice things, but find big designer labels to be ostentatious. Doesn’t mean no one else should have a gucci briefcase. My expenses are: save for retirement; mortgage; vacation; food; other. Clothes is down the list for me, but why would I care how anyone else spends their $? Travel is the biggest waste of money - but that’s where most of my disposable income goes.

I’ve definitely seen this at bar association events and it’s pushed me to step up my game. They’re definitely way better put together than I was as a junior. I feel like I need fashion advice from them now as a senior. lol

like

Maybe because Houston is image obsessed and if they don’t, they won’t be viewed as “serious” by seniors and shareholders. Maybe because this toxic fucking environment has engrained that the dress code is necessary if you want to stop doing diligence and get some real work. But more than anything, maybe you need to worry about yourself. Maybe you’re only Counsel because you couldn’t put the work in to getting a suit that fit.

funnylike

Nah this isn’t it- Our PGL is a slob and so are a lot of the partners And lmao at the “only counsel” dig- have you considered that some of us may like having a specialty area and less responsibility and spending time with our families? Partnership is not for everyone and there’s people who choose to go a different route. I’m “only counsel” bc I don’t work as many hours as the partners not bc I’m not wearing an Armani suit

like

I fall into this category, but I spend money on quality not labels. No regrets. Cheap, fast fashion is ass.

Everyone in my SF office is in Zara or J Crew or something of that caliber. I see a Rolex here and there but the people I know with them got them as graduation or milestone bday gifts from their parents. I don’t know anyone balling out on clothes and shoes, but it’s also SF 🤷🏻‍♀️

You sound so bitter. You made an entire post just to share you’re jealous of Cece Xie. I

You could have just said that and saved us all some time as this had nothing to do with any other associate. Are you not embarrassed?

The bizarre take is your original post. Why call at a person who joined social media as a SENIOR ASSOCIATE with a partner who is also well-off in a post about junior associates attire?

Her lifestyle has no relationship to your observation. You should do some soul searching on why you don’t see that.

Why do you care?

I mostly wear on sale American Eagle jeans and a nice blouse that was max $30 from Nordstrom Rack purchased within the past 5 years to the office. Sometimes I'll wear black joggers from Amazon and long blazers.

Let’s talk suits. Do you have any thoughts on a junior associate wearing an expensive suit or a suit that departs from the norm (eg subtle pinstripe navy suit, or a suit with larger lapels/peaked lapels?). I’m thinking about upgrading my suit, but I don’t want to piss anyone off with a suit screaming the message “I’ve made it” when I’m just a junior associate. Perhaps it’s just all in my head and no one actually cares.

I am defending an eviction for a client who has given possession of the property (as of Nov. 30). Plaintiff’s complaint has one claim – possession. They did request relief for attorney’s fees. NJT/Final Hearing commenced 10/27, was only 30 min and was therefore continued to 12/20. Plaintiff had counsel at that time but they are no longer represented.  I want to file something notifying Court that Plaintiff claim is now moot, making sure that judgment is not entered that hurts (cont'd)..
