Have you guys noticed that the 2020-2022 associates dress in expensive, gorgeous designer clothing and accessories daily? When I was a junior 20 years ago, juniors were raggedy AF we mostly had wrinkled suits & cheap shoes and dressed up only for client meetings. These new associates looking like models everyday to come in to do some diligence. Is it just my firm or what is going on? Are they taking selfies at their desk and acting like Cece Xie?? Do they not have loans?

I have not noticed this at all. But regardless, personally, I dressed up way more as a junior because it was exciting! I was poor and I had money to buy nicer clothes for the first time, was working in a fancy office for the first time. Now the excitement has long ago worn off and I dress like a comfortable slob. Let them have their fun.

back in my day we dressed in burlap sacks for our 10-mile walk up the hill to work, and we LIKED IT

The more I see OP’s comments, the more I sense the passive aggressiveness. Why do you care about what brands other attorneys are wearing? Any body on a big law salary can comfortably afford to dress well if that’s their intent. Nobody bats an eye when people wore the same zip-up vests daily in the summer and called that work place appropriate (myself included). Are we really criticizing people for dressing well and coming to the office?

P.S. most people will spend more on luxury accessories (handbag, watches, shoes, etc.) and then pair with a more affordable brand for their shirts, blazers, dresses, etc.

likehelpful

Thats exactly what I do. I bought Rolex (second hand) with my summer associate salary, and then bought a LV and YSL bags when I started as a first year (also second hand). I pair them with affordable Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfeger and WHBM clothes.

I mean we get paid the same amount (if anything purchasing power of a BL salary has dropped in HCOL areas) so if you looked “raggedy” maybe that’s on you?

Maybe because we get paid a quarter of a million dollars a year and we care about how we look? The first thing I did was go to Neiman Marcus and purchase a suit from Armani, Tom Ford, and Canali.

Lol so A36 doesn’t understand what purchasing power is — got it

Growing up with Instagram has warped Gen Z into being the most materialistic generation of Americans ever, for all their socialist posturing.

They also have had more cosmetic surgery by their respective ages than any other generation, likely for similar reasons.

likefunny

Uhh.. that I’d like to appear youthful and not hate the next generation? It’s a joke, but clearly someone is super insecure lol

like

I wish I had dressed more like that when I had the chance! I was so worried about loans that I didn’t really buy anything nice, and now that I’m debt-free, I’m been working from home for three years, gained a ton of weight, and basically not domesticated anymore. So to all of you kids reading this, go get it while you can!!

like

I feel this so hard.

like

Cont: I’m seeing brand names like Celine and LV bags that are at least a few thousand, Balenciaga, Gucci, Dior, Bergdorf shoes, Cartier watches and bracelets…and they’re not wearing the same thing every day… feeling like Anna Delvey is showing up to tell me I look poor. Anybody else seeing this?! There’s only
a handful of juniors that are matching the slovenliness of the rest of the firm

likefunny

Rebag is another great place for secondhand bags.

like

I’m confused about your real question. Is it how do new associates afford nice clothes? Or is it why does this generation of new associates care about dressing nice?

Regardless, every generation of big law associates could afford nice clothes if they wanted them. The difference is what they want, value, prioritize. Big law has never paid a bad salary. Even when the salary was lower, the dollar went just as far especially in Houston considering it used to be a LCOL city. The new associates are probably paying triple what you paid in rent 20 years ago.

The other answer to your question is social media. Influencers are more relatable than celebrities. This generation is becoming attorneys when work wear is spotlighted in places like TikTok. Compared to generations ago, no one talked about workwear. It wasn’t “cool.”

And yes if it’s literally something new every day it’s probably RTR

I’ve had a RTR subscription and loved it. I care about how I look/love clothes. Looking good (obvs on top of doing good work) has not failed me yet.

Junior here - I dress in $30 polos and $50 chinos. I got too many loans. Note that loans are paused though so a lot of juniors just living it up for now

like

But the loans are still going to be there and BigLaw might not??? You’re smart JA1 idk about your colleagues though but I guess that’s not my problem

I think part of it might be that there are more affordable brands that look good today than in the past. Competition in the fashion world has really accelerated with e-commerce.

like

I don’t understand the problem with it though? If they can afford and care enough, then push on 🫡
