Gout? I thought that was eradicated in the middle ages
I wish it was. Thanks PwC. I guess it's part of getting old.
Gotta lay off the booze, oysters, and red meat.
But sorry for your pain - get well soon
Gout-sounds filthy doesn't it? I hope you get well.
Fellow gout sufferer at 29. Up your daily water intake to 4L, lay off the meat, cap your protein shakes to a single scoop a day, up your fruit consumption, and most importantly give your liver and kidneys a break through a couple months of abstinence. FYI, it fucking sucks. Have fun hahaha
Crystals in your joints that cause pain with movement. You could get a prescription for Colchrys (sp) for flare ups, my mother uses it and says it works for her. I would suggest a rheumatologist now to prevent it from making life hell long term.
OP, I suffer from gout as well. I get it in either big toe, and it's extremely painful.
Go see a good rheumatologist. There is a daily medication called allopurinol which has zero side effects for me and which dramatically reduces the likelihood of a gout attack. My father has gout, and it is he who told me about allopurinol. He has taken it for years and hasn't had an attack since he started. I have taken it for 2 years, and it has helped dramatically.
Cholcrys, which someone else mentioned, is a medication that can help stave off an attack if you can tell that you are going to have one soon, but it hasn't started yet.
If you are in the midst of a full blown gout attack, which is truly awful (for those of you fortunate enough not to have experienced one), then your rheumatologist can give you a shot of steroids in the joint itself. Momentary discomfort, relief afterwards as the inflammation recedes. Alternatively, he/she can prescribe a six day course of steroids (similar to Prednisone) that will help alleviate the inflammation, swelling and pain.
In terms of diet, there are certain foods that are rich in purines which you should eat only in great moderation. There are lists on the internet, and you will learn over time what your trigger foods are. For me, they are avocados, scallops, red meat (especially organ meat, eg sausages), high fructose corn syrup, and, unfortunately, beer! No problem with wine or whiskey, though! Also, as someone else pointed out, drink lots of water every day, which we should all do anyway.
Good luck, OP!
Good
Thanks pwc 2. Found out I have some calcium buildup on my wrist and that it could be calcific tendinitis too. I'm icing the area, drinking lots of water and taking Advil too. I'll look into those medications tomorrow. Again I appreciate it.
What are the symptoms?
Thanks all for the tips and advice. @KPMG 1, just felt very painful moving my wrists around.
