My pay is spread throughout summer months.
Daycares and learning centers are always looking for good qualified people
Going into my 14th summer as an educator and am pumped! I'm excited about what those 8 weeks mean for my finances, family, and future.
A while back, we decided to do whatever it took to live on the take home pay from my and my wife's salary. When we did, it opened up the possibilities for what those summer weeks could mean. More over, I didn't expect this to happen, we found that we complained less about how relatively little the teaching profession earned because we saw the lifestyle and family benefits of the enormous amount of time off that is baked into the teacher's calendar.
While picking up another job is always something you can do if you're needing to pay down some debt or if you have another specific short term financial goal (saving for house down payment, etc.) during summer months, getting a summer job just to "make more money" will result in your growing to have disdain for your main gig. Do whatever you can to live on your income from your day job and use the extra time to invest in you and your husband. When you can focus on the exceptional schedule rather than the less than exceptional annual pay, you'll see all kinds of opportunities for ways to grow begin to emerge.
As for me and my family, this year, we're looking forward to spending two (non-consecutive) weeks away with family and friends, going to the pool daily with our 7 year old, camping a couple of weekends, exercising, reading, and reviewing our family's mission and goals for the future.
The teaching profession is challenging - everyone knows that - but there's a ton of joy to be found in it both while in and while out of school.
I wish y'all the best as you begin to sort out your summer and life together!
My district spreads pay over 12 months.
If your district gives you an option to get paid over 12 months instead of 9, that is the best. If not, figure out your annual salary divided by 12 and put the difference aside in an account for the summer, then "pay" yourself out of that account so that you don't have to work during the summer. You could also volunteer to teach summer school, if that's available. Other than these suggestions, the only option is a summer job, but summers are one reason I love teaching. It's great to have the time off for travel, gardening, and family!
Are there summer school jobs available? I always taught in the summer to help with finances.
Are you getting 12 month pay or 9 month pay?
I spread my pay, but also tutored over the summer
Sadly, it’s very normal for teachers to get part time or summer jobs. In Tx our salary is divided over 12 months
Daycares have the kids in the summer .
I've delivered papers, taught various camps, worked in stores. I don't know what you make, but if your annual salary is decent and you're paid over 9 months, consider budgeting to save for the summer months if you don't want to get a part time job. Otherwise, many teachers do it just to make some extra money even if they don't need it week to week.
Craft fairs if you're creative. You should focus on starting your own business so you can retire as soon as possible.
