How much is your mortgage? There is a lot you’re not telling us
This is useless without a breakdown of your spending, but from your description it sounds like you may be house poor.
Makes sense A2 and D1.
Instead of telling us what you don’t spend money on you’d have to tell us what you do spend money on
Is your family good at turning off appliances etc when not in use? We found unplugging our smart TV for a 1 BR apt in NYC actually saved us $30/mo in electricity.
Thought it was a fluke initially but the 2 months we left it in was consistently higher.
We’ve since gotten rid of tv (lifestyle choice) but it is something small that could potentially help.
We also turn off the internet at night 😂
I’ve heard of people unplugging their washer / dryer and saying $20-40 a month too. My machines are over 20 years old so I’m afraid to do that and they die, but I think I’ll try it once we do get new ones!
I’m half expecting the budget to look like this
Would have to see your budget in order to asses what you can improve
Subscriptions - Netflix, Spotify, workout apps
Groceries - in season shopping & non brand name items
Conveniences - cleaners, grocery delivery, etc
Home maintenance- shopping around quotes
Utilities - huge list of things you can adjust, like unplugging items or not having everything connected to wifi so need less
Gifts - nuff said
Highly recommend looking up Graham Stephan on YouTube and searching for some of his cost savings videos. For context he’s a millionaire who’s still very frugal and spends like $20k a year- he has lots of cost savings tips
How much is your monthly mortgage payment a month?
Also, several other people have been asking for your budget breakdown per month. If you don’t have those numbers already, that would probably be a great place to start assessing the situation.
What is your mortgage payment, car payment, any student loan? Day care/nanny costs?
Give us your budget, that will help us
Creative cost savers? Or budget re-model? Sit down with your spouse and discuss why you want to reduce your budget. Define why. Then do what you need to do to get there. If it requires something as grand as reducing fixed costs, the why will influence if that is reasonable. (ie if the why is you can’t afford travels, maybe you’d be willing to look into reducing mortgage. House is the biggest fixed cost that actually could be reduced. If you’re spending $8.3k, and $3k is mortgage, why not find an option that’s $1.2k / month. It’s feasible.
Oh wow. This situation doesn't sound like a cost saber issue, honestly it's time to use investment as investment! I don't know your full budget, but when you have no luxury and it's all living, it doesn't matter the cost, there are excuses all over the place for higher cost of living that I personally believe in, then it's a clear sign it's time to use what you have as investment. What's good in this portfolio is where you temporarily divest, you can use the returns to re-invest and support your living expenses so you can put your other income towards the good in life, or else future investment. Even if you do something less permanent and less productive like remortgage or get a second lien that pays the first one a vehicle. If say of you do that though, use it to do the temporary divest with returns towards re-invest. EI, move that money!!!
Can you refinance?
Additional context: student loans, mortgage, car payment: all under 3%
Feel like I’ve minimized my debt burden, but open to pearls of wisdom
Sell the car you are financing and go buy something cheap in cash
Download app like Mint. Start paying everything through credit card. Mint will track all the expenses for you. Decide for yourself what is not required and stop spending on it.
Wait, what’s the problem? $100k for family of 3 is $40k+$40k+$20k which are totally reasonable lean annual expense numbers already.
No need to eat out 5x a month, that’s one of them. Also wondering about the monthly mortgage and property taxes. Were you able to afford the house without stretching?
