Hey all, TIA. I’m trying to figure out what level roles in data science to aim for when I move to industry. I am working on my master’s in data science. I built volatility models for 5 years then moved to credit risk modeling (regressions, et al) for 3 years; also added financial engineering this year. I lead projects and have had direct reports. Also did 5 years in Army. I am a senior associate now and will likely make manager early next year.

Should I aim for DS, Senior DS, or Lead DS?

Lead but beyond doing the work you have to be comfortable presenting to greater job-DS team and taking ownership. If you’re not there year then senior but that has to be your goal

I appreciate the response- thank you!

Congrats on making the successful transition.

Should I specialize in Blockchain or AI? I’m a freshman in a CS degree and I can’t decide. My main argument to choose blockchain is the easy entry with little experience and high salary, I plan on growing my skills during the bear market and get a job once the market recovers. Regarding AI, I find this field fascinating but I feel like it requires a lot of experience, degrees and diplomas.

Hello, I recently was reached out to by an in-house recruiter at a similar but slightly different company than the one I currently work for. The recruiter provided a base range and an OTE range. The lower end of that range is what I am currently making. The higher end of that range is almost 200k more than my current comp. The role is almost identical. I wasn’t looking to move, but that higher end range would set my family up very nicely for our goals. But I am happy at my current company. Help?
