Hi folks. I’m currently a data scientist at a T2/B4 firm doing fairly technical work. I have a little over 1 yoe but have recently decided I want to switch to SWE (but still in the data domain) in tech. I think I have a lot I want to learn from tech-first companies that my current firm doesn’t prioritize. I am still in the middle of interview prep but am likely to get a 110-120k offer from a different consulting firm in a non-hcol city. Any advice? More in comments

In terms of reputation, I’d say my current firm is a slight step up. Money wise it’s a large increase (30+%) but it’s still less than most tech companies. Quite a few people from my practice have left for fang or equivalent so I don’t doubt that I have the ability, it’s just a lot of money to not at least consider. Work wise it’d be in my domain and an area I’d like to continue work on. However, it’s an area that many companies are investing in. As you may be able to tell I think I’m leaning away but I was hoping other past data scientists who have made a transition to tech could add their perspectives

What's the area? Fairly technical work doesn't equate to SWE unless you're grinding LC and interview prepping

Transitioned from consulting to an SME role at a tech company... So mostly checking if you were over your head

I’ve always gotten the advice that when you want to switch jobs you should take interviews from places you’re not actually interested in, so you can understand your value in the market and have better negotiating power. I’m doing that rn - took a couple interviews to gauge my skills, my market value, and see what I need to work on for interviews that I actually care about. However, I feel really guilty about wasting their time and going all the way knowing I’ll just say no at the end. Wwyd?

Currently invested in VOO, VOOG, BRK.B, and MSFT (ROTH IRA & Individual Brokerage A/Cs). Should I be investing more heavily with all the cash I’ve saved up; I’m a little worried about the market volatility, but also I’m 23 so want to cash in on compounding interest.
