Hi Gillian,
It’s so great you are out there looking to find how best to support your son. This step alone shows a tremendous amount of love. Number one thing you can do is make sure your son knows you love him for exactly who he is. And keep reminding him through your words and actions.
There is a great guide at https://www.hrc.org/resources/supporting-caring-for-transgender-children which can be a good starting point. In it you’ll also find additional references to blogs and resources.
Thanks for showing up for your son. It’s not easy, and even in the lgbtq+ community, you’re going to face some adversity. But know that the vast majority of us are with you and your son, and we will all eventually get the justice we deserve if we’re willing to fight for it.
Parents should really just be there to support and love their child. Many in our community may not have that and it sounds like you are giving that to him. His confidence is something he will need to find and build. With your support, hopefully that will be an easier journey. Keep telling him you’re proud of him. Keep encouraging him to live the life that he wants. It may not always feel like it’s enough to you but it is so meaningful.
Tell your son that outside influences is just that... outside. They don't determine how you should be. Being yourself my frighten some people, but that is not your responsibility to make them respect you. Let them see you for who you are. Not an alien from another planet, but a person here on earth, who is perfectly together with in your own skin.
You are 💯 welcome in this group. Thank you for being a member of this community!!
