Hi there, starting new in private practice. My job requires billable hours. Anyone know where I can find a list of terms and descriptions I can use when I am billing clients? TIA

Are there fellow lawyers at your company you can ask?

Reach out to them or whoever your contact has been, even if it's an HR/recruiting person or a partner. Let them know this is your first time billing hours and you want to make sure you are providing appropriate descriptions. I'd imagine they'd be more than willing to help whether it be giving you examples or connecting you with someone who can. This was part of our training when I started out at a law firm, so it may come that way as well.

I heard so much about minimum billable hours here by staff. I never saw that email. Is it inly for certain groups?

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.

Mostly to vent, but wonder if anyone else has had to deal with this…my team consists of a partner, shareholder, 3 associates, myself and a legal assistant. We have a busy docket, 70 active litigation files. For over a year I have been dealing with inexperienced legal assistants, mostly coming from other areas of law. The partner relies heavily on me to clean up the messes, fix the mistakes, etc., and HR is on me for doing too much admin, i.e., non-billable work.

I am a 10 yr lawyer. 7 yrs in my practice area. Little over a year at current firm. Still an associate. Im at large plaintiff firm w/ billable requirements. I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.

Partners/shareholders - how many hours are you expected to bill on work vs client dev and firm/associate management? My firm keeps saying that "there's no such thing as a relationship partner" and everyone top-to-bottom is expected to log 2000 hours/year on real billable work. Marketing etc is done on top of that. Is that normal?! If so, I'm going to have to totally rethink my life goals.

People on here are talking about billable hours and utilization... are those things that are tracked on an individual basis? We do it as a firm aggregate and thought that was the norm, but seems to be that it might be tied to specific people at other firms?

Hi All,
Currently I got an offer from Netcracker wanted to know about WLB in Netcracker and the job security. Currently they hired me in Order management team so wanted to know about which stack they using in order management.

What would you do?

I was recently promoted to be a senior and I’m on this project with an acting senior and associates. The acting senior would tell everyone, including me, what to do everyday before I get the chance to. I feel like he is stepping into my boundaries. I feel uncomfortable being told by him what I have to do when I know it myself. I feel like he’s my senior instead lol.

Am I being oversensitive about this as a new senior? Or how would you address this?

How do most people’s firms calculate billable hours for associates? In other words, what hours are counted towards your target? Do you get credit for things like CLE’s, mandatory trainings, etc.? What about pro bono work (assigned by the firm) or writing for firm publications? Or time that a billing partner writes off on paid matters? What about sick or other leave credits? Is it pretty much everyone’s experience that it’s just straight billable hours on paying clients?

Pros:
- astounding financial benefits, great healthcare

Cons:

- too many cultists
- closed culture with extremely compartmentalized information, working on a small piece of the puzzle, with reduced ability to demonstrate true value, unless already high up.
- collaboration across teams is made unusually difficult and doesn’t seem encouraged.
- not remote friendly -- making everyone go back

Manhattan Law Firms Eye Wall Street’s Lead on Office Returns

As Wall Street banks and the law firms that advise them push to get employees back to the office, lawyers at most large New York firms are expected to hit targets of three days per week.
Hybrid schedules, with office work taking place Tuesday through Thursday, is a popular format at many firms. For law firm leaders, a major factor in RTO decisionmaking has been the need to develop junior lawyers who’ve worked..

The firm I'm at, which is a mid-sized lifestyle firm with 1800 billables in NY (and any additional are compensated via end of year Bonus), is currently hiring 2-4th year associates for their corporate group (M&A, debt finance, emerging companies). I joined after 3 years in BigLaw and my work-life balance has improved significantly. DM me if interested- I am happy to chat.

Wondering if it’s just my v20 firm but it is so annoying when you have to work for incompetent partners that do not have the capability or stamina to do the work, but have one client or bring in one large matter every couple years. For us NYers, has anyone’s firm given a concrete estimate/indication of when we’ll be expected to be back in the office? We’ve been having regular all-hands updates, but they always keep it vague (will follow gvt guidelines, only when we feel comfortable, etc). Seems like other industries (tech obviously, but also big4) have been more forthcoming - wfh through end of the summer, etc., - even as the reopen momentum seems to grow in the city. Any info/educated guesses?
