Any word on layoffs at JPM?
Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

For large firms, layoffs due to this does not typically happen for several months. No one is sure how long this will last and many are trying remote work, which may be successful. After all, companies are also not grinding to a complete halt.
So before we panic, firms will assess how this quarter fairs and then how business continues the following quarter. Many businesses will ramp up quickly after a crisis like this to recapture their utility.
After 2 or more quarters go by and some further assessment, a firm can decide what actions are needed.
Think of it like this...there is a crisis, firm panics and cuts people within 2 months. Crisis is over in 3 months, the firm need to quickly hire and train new staff. That does not make a lot of sense and loses a lot of great internal talent
Very good points. There’s been some fear mongering on FB lately with caustic posts about layoffs being on their way. Thanks for the reasoned and informative posts.
