And you get more responsibility and more wins when you succeed and grow your scope. But you have to win at the day-to-day first.
First, most people in advertising are shit managers who don’t want to do it. If you have a genuine interest in helping people improve, you are ahead of the game.
Second, most strategists can’t explain clearly what their job is and how they do it. When you get known for being able to do both well, people listen to you, and buy into the idea of strategy as a key role.
Third, being good enough at your job makes managers want to replicate your skills. It’s not a seniority or tenure thing as much as a “do we need more [name] type people at this agency”.
Fourth, be somewhere big enough to have multiple layers of management.
