Depends on the firm and what kind of leave you take. There’s no legal requirement that it work any particular way.
I appreciate that we want partners to set an example for parental leave, but I think the partner responsibility creates an entirely different situation than it does for “employees.” At that level, it’s much more about your relationship with your clients, and is also easier to maintain a slower pace for the time you’re “back” but still not ready to be full speed. Given Principal 1 typically exceeds numbers, it makes a lot of sense to me that it’s best to slow down where you know you can, and then make decisions as they come up about what you want to do. I’m a female so parental leave comes with different “challenges” than it does for a male, but I can envision making similar choices. With my first, I was lower level and it was easy to take 16 weeks esp knowing I wouldn’t have as much control over my schedule when I came back, but if I had been a partner, taking less than that and then making my own decisions for a couple months seems fine.
