I enforce my boundaries early on especially in the work place. Those who accept it will respect it those who don’t typically have personal issues that they need to deal with.
I agree with this. You really do have to establish the boundaries very early on. It saves so much headache in the long run to establish them early.
The sooner you establish boundaries, the better. People are more reluctant to stop doing something than not doing it in the first place. If that window has passed, the best thing you can do is always accompany the boundary with a solution.
It's hard but doable. Some people see it as rude and I don't understand why. We all have the right to set boundaries for whatever reason.
The thing about boundaries is that people will either respect your boundaries or not... and that choice is theirs and isn't a reflection of you. It's important for your own peace and wellbeing to decide what is best for yourself and then ask for it. (Even a safe discussion where compromises can be made.) If your attempt at asking doesn't work, then you just have to just place the boundary yourself.... "No, I won't be able to do that," or "I'm not working during that time," or just plain NO.
I find that just plain no is the best way to go. When I try to give anything else it opens up the door for people to think my boundaries have wiggle room. They in fact, do not.
First, assess your personal boundaries. Communicate clearly with your colleagues and learn to say no. It's not easy but you'll get there.
It's one those things you just have to do. Don't sugarcoat, don't make concessions - draw your line and stick to it. "Sorry, I'm out of the office after 6PM. But I will take a look at this tomorrow." Etc. Clear and to the point.
What do boundaries look like for you?
The easiest way to start is to learn how to say no and not having to justify it. You'll feel guilty initially but it'll be better for your own peace of mid in the long run.
