How do you describe your job to someone who doesn’t work in insurance? Helping people when they need it most seems too basic.

I try not to talk about my job. If I need to I just state "Im in insurance". No I cant get you a quote or discount, nor do I care about what you pay. Small talk about 9-5 is something I try to stay away from. People are burnt out bc of work but also bc they never stop thinking about it. Stress 40-60 hours a week at work then stress or talk about it outside of work. I try to stay clear of that.

Same. I don't even want to think about work when I'm not there, much less talk about it.

I'm on the carrier side in broker relations so it's pretty easy to say I work on strategies to get brokers to sell more of our insurance to employer groups. But mostly I say "boring insurance job" and people don't ask follow up questions.

I say I'm an adjuster and no one ever asks what I do.

It’s difficult. There are memes that show the 7 principles of insurance. If someone is really curious you can try sharing that. But I don’t know of a really good 1 or 2 sentence description that encompasses the complexity of it. You say you’re an adjuster and most people just tune out.

I’ve been working for my State Farm agency as a team member for 2 years. I am licensed in property and casualty as well as life and health, but only make $13 an hour. I technically can make bonuses but I’m not supposed to dig into a sale and I have to send it to a sales rep (I am service and retention mostly). My boss also has me running a retired agents office until a new one is chosen (its an hour away with no pay increase or mileage pay). Also, no benefits! Should I start job searching?

Has anyone been successful in negotiating the schedule on a global pregnancy bill? My provider won't bill by visit and split the global cost into four payments all due by the 28th week. I don't understand how that's legal since it is so off the calendar of services and crosses calendar years (and insurance coverage), where most costs are incurred at the end of pregnancy with increased visit frequency and delivery.

So I had been working as medical interpreter up to the early part of this year. Today, during an interview, the Director with whom I was interviewing genuinely urged me to consider pursuing a career as a PA or even attempt to go to medical school. I had considered it in passing before but today was about the third or fourth time that someone had earnestly nudged me in that direction. Has anyone here made such a career pivot before? I love working in healthcare, there’s nothing like it.
