have you reached out to your manager to ask for opportunities to help ideate?
I have, and I’ve worked on some ideation projects for some pitches, but the bulk of my day-to-day remains production/design focused (as it should be, given my title).
Depends, are you a strategic thinker, good at photoshop, do you have a writer to team up with? Are you good at directing designers? Can you cook up beautiful decks and throw visuals together Super fast and good enough to sell ideas through that communicate clearly and that are on strategy?
Can you sell these ideas through? Good at pitching?
It’s nothing like design at all. If you don’t have experience with any of these things, super-hard.
While I can’t say that I’m a super expert in all of these (I’m still at a junior level, forgot to mention that) I can say that yes, I have the ideation/deck-building/speaking/etc skills to perform in this position. I went to ad school with art direction as my focus and wanted to go into art direction right away, but received a great offer as a designer during the pandemic. Now in the midst of it, I’m fearful that I’ll become siloed and lose the opportunity to get back on track.
As a CD, do you suggest I try to jump as soon as I can?
Make the jump as soon as you can! I have been trying for about 5 years? I’m finally there, yet at an agency where all the AD’s are titled as designers fml. Also, having a writing partner makes a world of difference. I highly recommend not waiting for the agency you’re at the give you art direction opportunities. Thats how I got stuck. Try to get hired somewhere else as an AD.
Agencies can partner you up. I’ve actually found that there are a lot more solo creatives that get paired at the job than I thought.
