How long did it take for you to find an exit? 1YOE and my company (boutique) is struggling, so I’m looking to leave ASAP, and getting worried I won’t find something before our next round of layoffs

It depends on your goals! I spent about 9-12 months looking but I was picky about what I wanted both in salary and in work and in company. looking back at offers and recruiters reaching out a reasonable timeline might’ve been

0-1 months: any job (maybe not best pay or exactly work I wanted)
1-3 months: a well-paying job (maybe not exactly work I wanted)—included multiple rounds of interviews at bigger name companies
4-6 months: a well paying job that you want. This includes the time to network, practice interviews, get interviews, go through rounds, etc.
6+ months: all of the above but a major change in industry (because your work experience isn’t directly applicable so it might be harder to get interviews)

I’ll caveat all of the above by saying it will really vary. If you’re a consultant going for a typical post consulting job it could take the 1-3 month range if things go smoothly. But here’s a good checklist:

-Does the job I want require time to network?
-does the job I want require time to study for interviews?
-Do I want a new job just for stable income or because I like that work (not being picky about the type of job makes it less time)?
-Am I making a major industry change? (will take longer)
-How much do I care about location (will take longer)
-if I get offered the position will I take it regardless of company? I.e would you be fine being a PM at a no-name vs. waiting for the shot at FAANG?

Partially before, partially during.

At your level it could be fairly quick in a normal environment. These days aren’t normal. I would start looking and applying if you’re really worried. There may be a great opportunity out there for you.

This might also be a good time to think about upskilling if there’s something you want to learn. I’m thinking short courses on coding, data/analytics, etc. This could be a very valuable time for you to invest in yourself.

I think almost everyone is anxious about the next couple years. Crucible moments like this can really accelerate someone’s learning and development.

It sounds worse than it is. Unemployment with whatever the gov lands on will be pretty solid. Assume you saved something and you can put student loans on hold getting laid off will be more of a paid time to search rather than stressing while on a sinking ship

I exited by contacting a broker and sold then I moved on a year later.

Which boutique?

3 years off and on. I was also traveling full time on projects where I had little privacy for calls, went though some medical issues and bought/sold a
house. (Hence the "off")

My past roles have been such that I do a lot of marketing projects, tasks etc. but I’m not a specialist. I’m worried if I use this terminology I won’t even be considered for a role. Thank you
