How many are experiencing more anxiety than usual? What’s causing the added anxiety, besides lower than expected billable hours?

Mainly lower billables. I'm an introvert, so I don't miss happy hour or dinners out. I'd like to be able to talk directly to friends and family (and coworkers) but it's not causing the anxiety that possible pay cuts/layoffs/definitely no bonus this year is for me.

like

Low billables, uncertain economic times, cabin fever, low physical activity and, since I’m in finance, when work does come it’s from stressed clients and partners.

My partner called this my “covid vacation” but he has no clue how stressed I’ve been. Recurring nightmares, constant chest tension. He doesn’t seem to know that my 150K of law school debt is like a anvil on my chest during this crisis.

like

I wonder how many years into practice do people forget about the struggles of a young attorney. It seems most (not all ) partners are incentive to the struggles of student loans, being alone, financial insecurity, etc. since I don’t have kids apparently it’s easy to assume this is a vacation for me. When in reality not knowing when I’ll see the rest of my family keeps me up at night along with a million other things of course.

like

It’d probably be a shorter list if you asked what’s not causing added anxiety. Lol It feels like everything is adding anxiety nowadays.

Lower billables, job security, finances, delayed closing on new home, aging parents, maintaining mental and physical health in a very small apartment with a bitchy downstairs neighbor...I’m basically a walking ball of stress.

I am a new associate (1 month in mid-tier firm) and I struggle to get work to fill up the whole day. In honest time, i get about 3-5 billable hours a day. Am I going to get in trouble or fired over this?? I am putting my best efforts when I do get work and I ask for work sometimes. At this point I feel like I am being annoying too…

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

Hi all! I recently accepted a remote/hybrid RN position to try something new. Majority of my experience is at bedside. The pay is less than bedside (as a traveler), but more than a staff nurse. Are there any RN’s that left bedside for a remote position that can give advice on the work/life balance? What pros and cons do you encounter?

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

Something has been bothering me for a long time and I want to get it off my chest.

My firm does upward feedback and I asked about 10 of my team to participate so that I could be a better supervisor for them. My results: I got mostly great feedback with constructive points, however along with it I received the meanest, most cold hearted criticism I’ve ever seen (con’t in comments).

Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

-I want to bill more hours, so my goal is to become the type of person who bills at least 8 a day
-I want to drink less alcohol, so my goal is to become the type of person who drinks occasionally

Neither of these feel that helpful. Any one have suggestions for other identity-based goals that get at these changes I want to make?

How do I know Big-Law is not for me?

I am a first year who just started a couple of months ago and I am literally confused all the time. I did some small work for two partners and they loved it, so put me on new deals but the mid levels I am staffed with absolutely hate the work I do. One said the work I did was laughable. I felt bed because I spent over 25 hours on this. I wouldn’t be very bothered but the other Associates in my class are killing it. So I just feel dumb all the time.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

When you meet with a partner for a new assignment. Do you bill for that time? I’m a new associate, so I don’t know. On the one side it seems that meeting and conferring for an assignment requested by the the client would be billable since it’s using firm time and resources.
