I’m a fourth year. Started working on like 20 clients and each year I’ve been consolidating it down. I’m currently at 2 clients where I am the go to person and handle the most work of the client and a few smaller clients where there isn’t much to do. There are some partners that insist I should work on as many clients as possible as a hedge against one client leaving the firm (and as a hedge against me leaving) and other partners who insist I focus on key clients and build a reputation/relationship. Otherwise I’m a nobody just running around with scraps. I prefer to build a relationship so my two core clients have about 70% of my time right now. At the end of the day you need to do what you want- not what the partner suggests you do. It took me a few years to realize that.
I work with 5 clients on an ongoing basis. One of the five is big and takes up most of my workload.
