Los Angeles - $1,700 to $2,200 for a 800 sqft one bedroom apartment.
San Diego - about $1,600 I guess.
San Francisco - Good luck!

You can go outside of sf. El Cerrito is a 15-20 minute Bart ride from the city and much cheaper. It’s right next to berkeley
Downtown SD High Rises: Studios are around $1800-$2600 for 450 sqft depending on your floor. 1B1B start at $2000-3200 for 600 sqft depending on your floor.
City of SD (10 miles from DTSD): Studios are around $1400-1600 for older units, newer units go around $1600-1800. Same discount for 1B1B, etc.
Move Further Out (10-20+ Miles): Can get a 2B2B house for $2900/month.

Omg so cheap moving there now!!
San Diego may be a bit less than the Bay Area but not by that much if you live in a nicer area. You are likely to find cheaper places as you move further east like spring valley or El Cajon, or even north county inland.
A lot of people live in San Jose and commute to San Francisco ( at least before Covid). San Jose is a bit cheaper with a 1bd usually around 2500-3000.

I pay $3400 for a decent 1 bedroom. 700sq ft. Was one of the more reasonable options in my neighborhood.

To be blunt, I also make way more money in SF than anywhere else. I’m cool with my life.
At least the weather is nice, unless you are in SF.
I am looking for apartments in San Diego currently. I’m looking for a 2 bedroom place that’s at least 1,000 sq ft. We’ve looked in a bunch of areas and rent ranges from 2.2k to 2.9k for these. One bedrooms seems to be around 1.5k to 2k depending on the area.
I appreciate the advice, but I’ve found the opposite to be true in my search (probably because of my budget). There are tons of apartment complexes all over the place, but I haven’t seen that many houses available.
SF non luxury one bedroom puts you around 2600-3000 depending on neighborhood
Unless you are looking at SF proper, you can get 2 bed apt in new buildings just across the bridge from SF with 20 mins commute or better yet - homes with mortgage under 2800 per month - 30 mins train ride from SF.

The thing to consider what you’re going to get for quality of space / area for cost. I’ve lived in 2/3 of these cities and have many friends in the other. San Diego is the best value and California’s best kept secret.

So stop spreading the word please!!
I own an upgraded 1500sq ft townhouse in North Park, San Diego. 2 bed 2 1/2 bath, 1 car garage and 1 off street parking spot. My renters pay $3,000/month.

Live to the south in San Mateo. Close to airport, ~40 minutes to get into city, quieter, sunnier. We pay $3800 for a 3 bed. Similar in Berkeley, with shorter commute (~30 min)

Not bad for SF, but yike in any other context
