I'm not female but I read a good tip on here.
When people talk over or interrupt you, let them finish and wait longer so it drags out into an awkward silence. Then ask if they're done or clarify they just repeated what you said.
I think keeping a cool composure helps more rather than let your emotions show, and "demanding" will backfire cos you'll be the one "acting out".
My boss tries to practice not reacting in the moment and advises me the same. We're both BIPOC.
🤷🏻♂️🤞🏻
This!!! I shut down and let them blabber on and on. After awhile it becomes painfully and awkwardly obvious and that usually does the trick.
I have found when I shut down they just keep talking, as if I weren’t there. My “go-to” approach is to immediately speak up and say (in very pleasant tone) “I’ve almost finished my thought, then would love to hear your reaction.”
BIPOC female here.
As an immigrant female, I second this, I’m not an AM but generally shutting down lead to people keep talking, sometimes forever. Establish leadership from the get-go and lead the convo! 🙌
Do you have someone of a lower ranking to take notes for you during meetings? I find that the optics are “she’s a secretary” when you’re the only woman in the room taking notes. F here if it matters.
You probably know this. But stay away from “I just want to…”, “is it ok if…”, “it would be great if we…”, emojis and exclamations marks in your written language. Instead, just state the things you want to say without the preamble.
