Check out perhaps how Jamie Dimon did it, he had a similar question to answer early on in his career 😊
Interesting story for sure but I believe quite a different scenario, Dimon went to the smaller firm after 2 years at BCG and a Harvard MBA. Probably better placed to make a big impact and accelerate quickly versus OP
Even if you joined the smaller firm with the mentor/partner you wouldn't be able to work directly with them without conflicting the mentor/mentee relationship. Colleagues who may learn of your relationship prior to joining, may question your worth and whether you deserve to be there.
If I were in your shoes, I'd join the T2 for the better exit ops whilst maintaining the mentor relationship.
T2. You can always go back to this smaller firm in the future imho
They haven’t mentored anything if you aren’t even full time yet. Just talk to them about it I’m sure they’ll understand T2 >>>> small shop

Building a network at an early stage of your career is helpful
The senior partner can open many doors for you, provided you perform well and maintain a good relationship
So, if I were you, I'd definitely join a firm where I know someone
Since you're just starting the brand is fine
You'll build it later

Its a no Brainer. Go with the known. Go with where you have a mentor in place.
