I am doing UXR interviews, and although I read that a background in design isn’t necessary for UXR, I have been asked a few times now whether I have experience in design and can use design apps. I have applied research experience and a solid understanding of product development, which I think should land me a UXR role one day, but I’d to hear any thoughts though if you think design knowledge is necessary for UXR?

I assume you have put together your UXR portfolio and that it demonstrates your ability to do research in the product development lifecycle. My experience is that only very large companies and consulting firms hire pure researchers so the fact that they are asking suggests they have never hired a researcher or they just ask as a general set of questions.

‘Design knowledge’ is a broad topic, yes I would expect my researcher to know ‘design thinking’ and where and how their work integrates. I would expect my researcher to know how to synthesis their work to be used in product development. No I would not expect my researcher to know visual design principles or interaction design. Now information architecture could be a part of research so it might be worth doing a personal project on that as a case study in your portfolio.

I joined a project that had already started and the team already settled on creating a user journey map, even though none of them are designers or in ux. I also have no experience in this field as I'm a data engineer. The user journey map was for mapping out the process for tenants finding housing assistance, so not a technical product. Given this new field and type of work, I've been having a really tough time. Anyone mind sharing what helped get you through your first ux project?

Is it normal for a Product Owner to lay out specs for how a feature should work?

I thought that was my job as the ux designer to figure out the best way to solve a need. But I’m getting handed projects where the PO, and sometimes the senior designer has laid out exactly what should happen (components used, flow, etc) to design a feature. It’s really frustrating because I don’t know if I’m supposed to be speaking up on what I think or just do the UI work I’m asked to.

This is pretty niche, but I have an emergency management background and am interested in transitioning to UX. However, I would love to find a way to combine my experience in disasters with UX research. Does anyone know of any tech companies that have an emergency management focus that would need a researcher for their products?

Looking for some advice on a career change. I work in a technical role and have well-developed soft skills. I want to transition to UX (w/ focus on accessibility). There are a lot of UX educational programs out there, some very new, e.g. Dribbble, and costs are all over the place - General Assembly is $15k (and full-time), CareerFoundry almost $8k, and then many others at a fraction of the price. Reviews also vary wildly. Are these more expensive programs worth the huge increase in cost?

I am switching careers and trying to get into the field of UX design. I made it to round two of the interview process for a UX Designer position, an interview with the hiring manager for this role. I have not made it this far before, are there any standard questions that get asked in UX interviews I should be aware of? Thanks I’m advance! I want to be as prepared as possible.
