She (this is a couple) is now refusing to return the dog and saying they are “99.9% going to keep him, but if something changes she will let me know”. The shelter says the current foster has precedence.
I cried 2 days in a row and I am so upset at myself for not pulling the trigger when I had the chance. The pup has a messed up back leg and the couple aren’t 100% bc they are worried about his leg. I love him, mangled leg and all. 😭😭😭
Pray that they change their mind, follow up with the shelter every 1-2 days if they decide to return him. No point following up with the couple since some people just dig in because they don’t want to “lose” in such a situation.
What a shame. They’re treating the dog somewhere as an option by saying “99%” AND went back on their word. Even if not this dog, you’ll find another foster pup - you seem to have a lot of love in your heart!
100% agree 😭
Awww. You have a very good heart and sorry this one didn't seem to work out. I have always adopted shelter pets to give them their forever home. You'll find the right one!
I’m really sorry :(, they don’t sound like particularly kind or honorable people after what they put you through. I’d never foster, tell someone they have priority to adopt, and then back out, that’s just really crappy. Can I ask if this was your first foster? The first is always the hardest to part with.
What others have said is spot on — see if you can find someone who really cares (within adoption) at the shelter and share that you would like to adopt him and he’s currently in foster. Ask if they can notify you if he’s ever returned. You’d be shocked how many dogs get returned in a few days because the owner didn’t want to deal with the effort of a dog :(.
If it doesn’t work out, I know this isn’t soothing now, but there are millions of wonderful dogs in the shelters in the US (hundreds of thousands or more euthanized for space). One of my dogs is a Puerto Rican sato (they alone have 600k stray pups on the island). I know another wonderful pup is out there for you.

Best of luck and thank you so much for opening up your heart and home ❤️. Rooting it works out for you!
