They sound unnecessarily dramatic but imo you’re doing yourself a disservice by answering that way. “It’s negotiable” would put you at the whims of whatever number they come back with. “I’m targeting a total compensation of $XXX” let’s you set the anchoring point and sets a better tone (you come across as a leader who’s direct and knows their value)
Unless you’re unemployed & desperate you should be willing to walk away if they can’t meet your expectations
You should definitely do your research beforehand and give a range.
Yeah, I have always looked at average salary range, but never implemented it as effectively...
I used to tell people to say that it’s negotiable and have a defined range. Now I’ve since changed it and it’s actually easier to anchor to hard-ish numbers in the same manner that the company operates. For example, if it’s a base + bonus + RSU structure, make sure you have numbers for all three and confirm with the right person that it is the structure. Ultimately, you have a TC number in mind but not every company pays out bonuses etc so make sure you are comfortable with the guaranteed portion of the TC.
I usually use Google. Otherwise crowdsourcing using the usual suspects like Reddit Glassdoor Levels Blind or fishbowl.
You gave a complete non-answer, most people would be put off by this. If you would be willing to accept whatever number they offer then say that, though more likely if you have a minimum almost in mind add 10-20% and anchor there.
Yeah... I can see that too. I will be sure to add it going forward.
Just ask them what the range for the role is first. Most companies have a pre-budgeted range. And be aware that your experience may not qualify you for the top end but it’s a fair place to start.
I would answer the compensation question with that it’s made up of many components, base + bonus + benefits + perks + travel benefits + firms market reputation etc. Given those haven’t been discussed it’s hard to provide a firm number. However, my expectations are around the 70 percentile mark of the total comp range advertised for this role.
