I feel you. When I was going through my clinical years, it was important to take it one step at a time and focus on the present task. It was also helpful to practice self-care, such as taking breaks to exercise, meditate, or just take a few minutes for myself. I would also recommend connecting with other medical students to share your experience and provide each other with support. Hope this helps!
I’m ten years out and I still get it on days. I find myself comparing my skills and knowledge to my peers and keep wondering what they think of me, especially if I ask for a second opinion and doubt myself. Then other days, the same colleagues are asking my opinion and I realize I’m not an imposter. Or if I am, then maybe we all are?
It's hard to not compare yourself to others or feel like if person A can handle 20 cases a day then so should you, etc. I can confidently say that once I got control over my schedule, allowing more time for more complicated cases, my confidence improved because I was able to take my time and think through things. Everyone has things they are better at than others. Find those things for yourself and they've in them. Whether it's cytology or ultrasound or surgery or dental or hospice care!
It's completely normal to feel this way. Vet school provides you with a foundation but it is mostly basic. You learn how to be a doctor by being a doctor. That's why they call it practicing medicine. Make sure that your seniors are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to mentor you. A good clinic will start you off slow with just wellness appointments and give you an hour or so per appointment. The other docs will be willing to help you interpret rads, bloodwork and PE findings and tell if your treatment plan is appropriate.
Take it day by day. Sometimes we overwhelm ourselves with what has to be done and it seems overwhelming but it's actually not. You have so many steps between now and being a doctor
