As someone in the plastic surgery industry, we do not employ anyone with visible tattoos. With our clientele and concierge service visible tattoos and facial piercings are not permitted by our employer.

It's interesting that certain industries just don't allow it.
Just out of curiosity...Would henna be allowed?
@Nurse Practitioner 1, I wholeheartedly believe that some people have tattoos in places no one can ever see, except for them, naked, in front of a mirror. I'm confident that someone in your “circle” has a tattoo that you just do not know about. Some people get them for their own knowledge, and it is sacred just to them! I, personally, have numerous tattoos, including on my bicep and L. ventral forearm. With over 17 years of experience as a CCMA, I have witnessed the positive changes within our healthcare system regarding staff hair styles, tattoos, and much more. Throughout my career in aesthetic/reconstructive surgery, urgent care, and dermatology, most of my tattoos have been brought up in conversations with patients, alleviating their fear during treatments. Additionally, my tattoos have helped me connect with patients who have experienced infertility and the joy of rainbow babies. I consider myself privileged to have formed lasting friendships with these amazing individuals. Tattoos are not unprofessional (unless offensive) and nor are they a distraction. Such thinking resembles the notion that girls cannot wear tank tops in school because their shoulders/arms would be too distracting for the boys. I respect differing opinions, but I do hope that they do not hinder the opportunity to meet incredible people. Tattoos do not define a person; rather, they represent a significant moment in that individual's life.!
I don't think they should be a big deal at all, as long as they're not offensive. It's 2024, there are so many other things to worry about aside from someone else's body art.
Distraction from what?? ^
Not at all. They were stigmatised as a sign of criminals but we should be way, way past that level of closed-mindedness by now. My 7 tattoos don't make me worse at my job.
I remember when military personnel had a tattoo on the arm.. not stigmatized, proud of being in military.
I work in a major healthcare network in St. Louis. Tattoos no-longer need to be covered. Even upper management is tattooed. My manager has full sleeves. I think its great. We strive for an all inclusive environment.
Professionalism has been long gone but if a patient doesn’t want someone in there room that looks like they just step out of prison then facilities will need to respect their wishes.
This current society will accept almost anything due to shortages in healthcare workers but it doesn’t mean as patients we don’t have options.
Call me old fashioned. I don't think tattoos belong in professional work places. Just as long red nails, open toed shoes or long beards are to wear on your own time.
Agreed!! Someone commented that if it weren't for the nursing shortage, tattoos might not be accepted in healthcare, and I believe this is true.
Yeah I really don't feel like people care about it anymore. Almost everyone has at least one tattoo that I think it's just not as much of a taboo anymore, you know what I mean? Even the elderly don't seem to be that concerned about it anymore
It is NOT TRUE that "almost everyone has at least one tattoo."
Absolutely no one in my family or circle of friends has a tattoo. It is NOT a norm.
I worked in dermatology and mohs surgeon they made us cover. But they don't even force that anymore. And every chef I know is covered still getting fancy restaurants just depends on the "artwork" and your skills
Listen we can't be mad because people don't like or don't want to see tattoos. To be honest some of us went overboard with them no matter what story they tell. No they absolutely don't stop people from doing their job or being good at their job. Unfortunately it's always going to be people that judge.
No - unless it’s something really grotesque and offensive for example a naked women / man part tat can be covered if you’d like to work at certain establishments. If ur working at McDonald’s I wouldn’t care but if it’s accounting or nursing let’s not!
i dont like them
No. I realize some tattoos could be offensive.
I’m a dental hygienist and I have two full arm sleeves. Nothing offensive, it’s the opposite in public though. I often get stopped and told they’re amazing. In the operators I have to be covered legally, but I don’t care when I take off my lab coat.
I'm sorry but unless the tattoos are somehow offensive like a giant middle finger or something racist, I don't think it should matter. I could see if they were offensive making a big deal of it but this is 2024. I don't think we should even care about tattoos anymore, everyone has them.
Not true! Everyone does not have a tattoo
I absolutely can't stand working with anyone covered in tattoos for several reasons:
1. It is totally DISREPECTFUL to older patients who were raised when people would had tattooos were criminals, carnival workers, or deserving military.
2. I believe that anyone who has multiple tattoos is compensating for some lack in themselves.
3. I, personally. Have cared for patients who have contracted horrible infections from their tattoos.
4. I always feel that a person with tattoos is DARING everyone around them to say something about their "ink." LOOK AT ME!
5. It is so sad to see someone in their 60's and 70's, especially women, with sagging, discolored tattoos all over their poor bodies!
I don't thing these women counted on that.
6. Calling tattoos "body art" is being extra kind and an attempt to make them respectable.
Just my opinions!
Being that closed minded I’m sure the feeling is mutual with the staff….
I have a full sleeve on my right arm and many more. I’m a nurse and my tattoos are a communication starter.
I feel that if someone can relate them selves a woman that is truly a man, then my tattoos are a small fragrant of distraction. JS
On and another thing I do not look like I just walked out of prison and I also have a nose ring!
Get the heck over it. It’s our body and we should be able to do whatever we want!
Maybe we should have a backing like the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer), because someone got offended they started their own group and how dare you not hire them/they. I am also I’m management.
So judging my choice is the same as I said above. “Looks like I walked out of prison”
I know a teacher who has a rather large ankle tattoo, she’d cover hers with that thick makeup when she worked. But…that was 20 yrs ago. I don’t know if she still does that- we were moved to different schools. It was very pretty, nothing controversial
Appalled at how closed minded and ignorant some replies are. Healthcare has us, members of our communities, caring for others who may look just like us. Humanity is, in general, tattooed, pierced, comprised of POC, of different orientations, etc. - DIVERSE. And our workforce should reflect that, as we are the bridge to helping those we come in contact with. This is a strength and an asset as not everyone comes from the same walk of life, and that's okay!
My tattoos have acted as conversation starters, education topics, and provided a way for others to open conversations comfortably about their healthcare needs. I'm proud to have them and be able to integrate my interactions about them into my care.
Actually tattoos used to be a signature of the hippy crowd w long hair in the 60s.
H un BDay I’m no naked😩😩😩😩
Music not😂🤦🏻♀️😊🤦🏻♀️😊👌 lol lux un kaki
Tattoos are set in color but some people.Dark green ink but the certain colors there hey allergic reaction that causes rash so far as yet no one has gotten close to catch any sickness just be aware of the color tattooed. Herpes 5 and 6.
What? Is there a correlation to color tattoos and Herpes 5 and 6?? Not sure
I work for World Reknowned Midwest Medical Clinic® which used to be so hidebound that "ladies" had to wear hosiery up until just maybe 5 years ago. I kid you not. And even we lifted the tat ban recently.
I have no ink, but that's because I'm old and wrinkly. I admire the ink on my patients, the good stuff that is. Sad when somebody obviously let somebody practice on them.
